A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 2001-04-18

It was not a good weekend for the local teams in the BDO Inter Counties Champion. Warwickshire, in the premier division, played hosts to Lancashire. Saturdays games saw the ladies lose 5-1, Viki Franklin (18.33) their award winner, and the men finish level at six each with Scott Mitton chalking up a very creditable 32.20 average for his top player award.

In Sundays games it was the ladies who ended all square at three each, inevitably Trina Gulliver (24.24) taking the lady of the match. The men’s best player was Colin Fowler (30.67). However his 3-0 success against Ian Roe was not enough to avoid a 7-5 defeat, which put the overall result at 21-15 to Lancashire.

In division two West Midlands travelled north to take on fellow relegation battlers Humberside. It was a fixture the Midlanders could ill afford to lose, but lose they did. Both ladies team’s went down 5-1 with Claire Downing (12.72) the ‘B’ winner and Gill Cook (16.16) supplying the ‘A’ team their sole win.

The men’s teams also failed to find a win as the ‘B’ lost 8-4 and the ‘A’ 9-3. Paddy Johnson (25.05) and Ian Jones (28.20) took the respective match award trophies.

With one fixture remaining West Midlands are now just eleven points ahead of bottom of the table Gwent and ten points adrift of Humberside who are two places off the bottom.

Divisional Cup semi finals have been on the agenda for the Forest of Arden Winter League as the end of season fast approaches. Playing at the Harvester, already acclaimed league champions, Hobs Meadow took on Red Arrows and came up with a convincing 11-4 victory. The other semi between the Highwood and Silver Wings was staged at Hobs Meadow with the latter just getting the 8-7 verdict on their opponents.

In the Shadow League Divisional Cup semi final at the Cock and Hens, Harvester, with an 8-7 result edged out the Old Bill and Bull, they will now meet the winners of the match between the Poachers Pocket and Stechford Social in the final. The second semi will be played on the 24th April.

----------------------------------

In division one of the Longwood Winter League leaders Dolphin have had their advantage reduced to just three points as they could only draw 4-4 in their home game against the Red Lion ‘A’ from Polesworth. Second placed White Lion ‘A’ had a 5-3 win at the Red Lion (Wilnecote), while the Three Horse Shoes (Fazeley) had a more comfortable 6-2 result at home to the Queens Head.

Railway continue to hold on to top spot in division two after their 7-1 win over the Red Lion (Wilnecote). However, Wilnecote Club, who are second on the same 25 points as Railway beat Cue Sports 6-2 and have a game in hand on the leaders.

The Sheldon and District League will be playing off the quarter finals of their Sheldon Shield tomorrow night. The matches to be played are Dovecote v Lyndon Arrows, Banbury v B.C.S.Club, St Annes v Sheldon Heath Social Club, Sheldon Shoes v Hobs Meadow.
