NARBERTH DARTS ACE THROUGH TO NATIONAL FINALS
18-year-old Mikey to play in front of thousands in Cardiff finals
Narberth darts ace, Mikey Rees, is through to the finals of the Worthington’s 2016 Darts Champion of Champions event where he will compete against players from all over the country for a £5,000 top prize.
Eighteen-year old student Mikey earned his place in the finals, which are organised by Red Dragon Darts with the additional sponsorship of Molson Coors, by winning a qualifying event heat held at The First and Last Inn at Pembroke Dock. He topped a field of 32 hopefuls, hitting a 180 and a double three finish to beat Dan Pannell 2-0 in the heat final.
The Worthington’s 2016 Champion of Champions finals, which take place at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff on August 28, will see 256 darts players – all winners of qualifying events held around the country – compete for a total prize fund of £18,500 in a best of three legs format which mirrors that of the iconic News of the World competition.
Mikey, who is sponsored by Narberth Sand and Gravel and counts beating professional darts player Terry ‘The Bull’ Jenkins in an exhibition match as one of his highest achievements to date, plays club darts for The Bush in the Narberth Darts League and Super League darts for Haverfordwest. He’s also been picked to represent Somerset next year
“I’ve done really well in pub league darts; I finished an entire season without being beaten when I was 15 and I’ve won prizes for the most 180s and highest finish,” says Mikey. “But playing in the Worthington’s 2016 Champion of Champions finals against the likes of last year’s winner Gerwyn Price, Wes Newton and Barrie Bates will be a much harder challenge. I can’t wait.”
