FOCHRIW DARTS ACE THROUGH TO NATIONAL FINALS

36-year-old Russell to play in front of thousands in Cardiff finals

Fochriw darts ace, Russell Powell, is through to the finals of the Worthington’s 2016 Darts Champion of Champions event where he will compete against players from across the country for a £5,000 top prize.

Russell, a thirty-six-year-old car component engineer, earned his place in the finals, which are organised by Red Dragon Darts with the additional sponsorship of Molson Coors, by winning a qualifying event heat held at The Mount Pleasant Inn near Fochriw. He topped a field of hopefuls, hitting a double four to win the heat final 2-0.

The Worthington’s 2016 Champion of Champions finals, which take place at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff on August 28, will see 256 darts players – all winners of qualifying events held around the country – compete for a total prize fund of £18,500 in a best of three legs format which mirrors that of the iconic News of the World competition.

Russell, whose darts career has until now been limited to playing for teams in local leagues in Fochriw, Rhymney and Abertysswg, missed out on qualifying for the Worthington’s Champion of Champions event last year and had to watch his friends compete.

“Qualifying for the finals is my biggest achievement in the sport and having watched the play last year, I can’t wait to be part of the action this time,” says Russell. “Playing in front of thousands of darts fans will be a huge challenge but I’m looking forward to testing myself against the likes of last year’s winner Gerwyn Price, Wes Newton and Barrie Bates.”
