MVG Reigns Supreme in New York
Michael van Gerwen claimed his first World Series title of the year after beating Jeff Smith 8-0 in the Final of the 2023 US Darts Masters. Mighty Mike follows on from winning his record-breaking 7th Premier League title with victory at Madison Square Garden, beating Jim Long in the Quarter Finals and former World Champion Rob Cross in the Semi’s.
MVG came into the Final day on Saturday having claimed a 6-2 victory over debutant Jake Macmillan, including a 141 checkout in his victory over the Canadian international. Jim Long would face the high-flying Dutchman in the Last 8 after stunning reigning World Champion Michael Smith in the 1st Round, claiming a 6-2 success.
Van Gerwen became the first player through to the Semi Finals with a 6-2 victory over the CDC Cross Border Challenge Runner Up, missing just 3 darts at double with a 112 finish to seal his passage through in New York.
The World Number 3 went through to face last week’s European Darts Grand Prix winner Rob Cross in the Last 4, with Voltage beating Dimitri van den Bergh 6-2 in his Quarter Final clash.
The 2018 World Champion included the big fish to break the Van Gerwen throw in the second leg, racing into a 6-4 lead in the Semi Final. 2 consecutive breaks of throw from the Green Machine clinched a 7-6 victory in the battle of World Champions, with the Vlijmen born player through to face Jeff Smith in the Final.
The Silencer had a weekend to remember in New York having claimed the 2023 North American Darts Championship earlier in the day, after he beat his World Cup partner Matt Campbell 6-5 in the Final.
Smith booked his spot in the Grand Finale with a 6-2 victory over 2019 winner Nathan Aspinall in the Quarters and a 7-6 last leg decider win over Luke Humphries.
However, the fairy-tale run from the Canadian came to an end in the Final, with Van Gerwen claiming an 8-0 whitewash success, including a 103 finish in the opening leg of the match. Victory at Madison Square Garden is the Dutchman’s second tournament crown, having won the event back in 2017 at Tropicana Las Vegas.
