The South Birmingham League attracted an encouraging 41 pairs to their doubles knockout and taking the title with a 2-0 result were Jim Frost and Luis Barberan who defeated Neil Parsonage and Martin Heaven in the final. Fourth placed The Lyndon were the only losers in the top four teams in the premier division of the Sheldon and District Winter League going down 5-3 away to Mackadown Social who are third in the table. Leaders Crown at Olton took their points tally to 24 as they handed out an 8-0 whitewash to their visitors Highwood KB’s and stay four points ahead of second placed Langley Hall Sports and Social Arrows who won their home tie with The Pirates 5-3. In division one Iron Horse with a 7-1 win at East Birmingham Allotment Holders Association maintained their three points lead over their nearest rivals Sheldon Marlborough Arrows who won 5-3 at Crown-Forget-Me-Not. With the leaders of division two Shirley RBL Misfits having a bye in week 13 second placed Lyndon Old Boys drew level on 19 points with the leaders after a 6-2 home win over Maggies, but the Old Boys have now played two games more than the Misfits. The Forest of Arden Winter League played off their doubles knockout and with a close final result of 2-1 it was Kevin White and Kenny Brush who beat Simon Edwards and Alex Edwards to take the title. With only two league fixtures remaining in the Four Oaks and District League both divisions are too close to call. In the first division, leaders The Boat beat Old Oscott Arrows 8-1 while second placed Boldmere St Mikes were 7-2 winners at Drakes Drum to leave them two points behind Boat, both teams have two matches remaining but will crucially meet each other in the final game of the season. In division two it was a week of close encounters as the divisional leaders St Thomas’s Social Club, in what could turn out to be a vital game lost 5-4 to second placed Erdington Arrows who are now level on points at the top of the table but have played one game more than St Thomas’s. Third placed The Boot kept their hopes alive winning 8-1 against The Duke and are only two points behind the leaders while fourth in the table The Fox were beaten 5-4 by Boldmere Tap and have now dropped out of contention. After just two fixtures in the Camp Hill League’s new season only three of the starting line-up of ten teams are able to boast a 100% win record. Reigning champions Cotterills Lane Club are in their usual position top of the table but are currently having to share it with the other two undefeated teams Holy Gulp and Eagle and Ball. Cotterills and Holy Gulp in turn won 6-1 against Emerald Club and Tyseley WMC while Eagle and Ball won their home tie with Devil’s Club 5-2. This coming Saturday at the Bishopsgate Club, Foleshill Road, Coventry, CV1 4JJ the Warwickshire Super League will be staging their Super League Mixed Pairs Knockout. Entries, together with the £10 entry fee will be accepted from 7.30pm with an 8.00pm start. At least one person from each pair must be a fully signed up member of the Warwickshire Super League. Prize money will be paid out to fourth place.
The Winmau Centre Thursday Night Champions League has a new leader Devinder Singh, however Devinder has played 20 games to reach his 89 points tally and respective second and third placed Adam Quinton and Chris Williams are both on 85 points and in turn have only played 18 and 16 games. Reigning champion for the past two seasons Mick Baker is currently eighth in the table some 17 points short of Singh but again he has games in hand as he has only played 14 so far. The only player from the 22 strong league is West Midlands player Sam Guest who has won all thirteen of his games and is on 77 points, twelve off the top but with seven games in hand and seven points on offer from each game he could in theory take his total to 126. As a result of not playing in week two of the Shirley Red Lion Premier League Mick Gorst had dropped from pole position to seventh, taking over in the number one spot is Mark Gwalchmai who has won all four of his games so far and only dropped one leg in the process. Mark’s latest encounters saw him beat both Chris Thomas snr and Jack Sidwell 4-0 to take his points to fifteen one more than second placed Pete Silver who began the night with a 3-1 defeat to Paul Higgins, then finished all square at 2-2 with Antony Daly and won his final game of the evening against Chris John 4-0 to take him from fourth to second in the table. However Silver has now played five games and the two following players Lee Harris and Chris Thomas are only one point behind him with a game in hand. In the Brierley Hill Friday Night League there was a shock for Pensnett Welfare Club ‘A’ as they lost not only their home tie with fifth placed Netherton Cricket Club ‘B’ 5-2 but also their number one position as they dropped to third in the table. Taking over the top spot is Netherton Cricket Club ‘A’ who won 7-0 at home against Britannia. Second in the table Brickmakers Arms have the same 38 points as the leaders after a 5-2 win away to bottom of the table Ten Arches.
