Wow!! what a start to the new UKDA National League season for Warwickshire in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division as they avenged last season’s opening day defeat, a 20-16 reversal at home to Cornwall, by winning this season’s opener away to Cornwall 25-11 which puts them top of the table with twenty-eight points, one more than second placed Lancashire whose first fixture of the new campaign saw them win their home tie with Dorset 24-12. A 22-14 win at Sussex sees Suffolk placed third with twenty-five points and making up the top four is Essex following their 21-15 home success over Glamorgan. The best reigning champions Yorkshire could manage was a 19-17 victory at Hertfordshire which sees them lying fifth in the table with twenty-two points.
Topping the men’s ‘A’ averages was Warwickshire’s new addition Dom Taylor who had a super 33.76 average in his 4-1 win over Lee Agar (Cornwall) while the men’s ‘B’ top average was 29.02 supplied by Lancashire’s Chris O’Connor in his 4-1 win over Dorset’s Jay Anderson. Glamorgan’s Rhian O’Sullivan was in superb form in her 3-0 win against Leanne Halls (Essex) chalking up a tremendous 28.36 average while the ‘B’ top average was 21.25 and came from Yorkshire’s Lauren Burgoyne in her 3-1 win over Kirsty Bond (Hertfordshire).
Three teams in the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division are topping the table with twenty-three points, Cheshire are top with the slightly better average after their win at Northamptonshire with Humberside just behind them after winning at Oxfordshire, West Midlands are third following their home success over Kent, all three teams winning 20-16.
Northamptonshire’s Ricky Evans topped the men’s averages with a tremendous 34.28 average in his 4-2 win over Cheshire’s Matthew Shaw, the ladies ‘B’ average also going to Northamptonshire as Carrie Wright beat Chloe Davenport (Cheshire) 3-1. The top average for the men’s ‘B’ came from West Midlands man Martin Price who averaged 28.78 in a 4-2 win over Kent’s Dave Saint. A super 24.80 average earned Lisa Brosnan (Middlesex) the ladies ‘A’ award as she won 3-2 against Hampshire’s Laura Turner.
A 22-14 win at home over Berkshire has put Merseyside top of the L-Style Division One table with twenty-five points, one more than second and third placed Somerset and Clwyd who in turn had 21-15 wins at home against Staffordshire and Devon. A further one point behind in fourth place with twenty-three points is Leicestershire who won their home tie with Worcestershire 20-16.
Anthony Brown (Merseyside) was in blistering form as he beat Berkshire’s Steven Hobbs 4-0 with an outstanding 36.44 average. The men’s ‘B’ award went to Berkshire’s James Johnson for his 4-1 win over Dan Nuttie (Merseyside) and 24.87 average. For the ladies, Staffordshire’s Row Sidley was the top ‘A’ player, with a 23.21 average, in her 3-2 win over Rachel Kingdon (Clwyd) and for the ‘B’ teams it was Leicestershire’s Ella Coburn, who averaged 20.88 in a 3-0 win over Worcestershire’s Lynne Arnold.
West of England have already opened up a three points lead at the top of the division two table, their 24-12 win at Buckinghamshire giving them a total of twenty-seven points with second placed Norfolk on twenty-four after their 21-15 home win over Tyne and Wear. Surrey make up the top three, their 20-16 home win over Northumberland putting them on twenty-three points, four adrift of the leaders.
It was third placed Surrey who took two of the four top four averages, Nick Ellis clinching the men’s ‘A’ with a 28.84 average in his 4-3 win over Northumberland’s Ridley Ladigus while Jake Eichen took the men’s ‘B’ award for his 29.91 average and 4-0 win against Scott Brown (Northumberland). Tyne and Wear’s Angela Kirkwood was the top ladies ‘A’ player, her 3-0 win over Norfolk’s Amy Lincoln giving her a 23.86 average. The top ‘B’ ladies player was Cumbria’s Liz Humphries who defeated Cleveland’s Mandy Stephens 3-0 and had a 20.31 average.
Wirral have go their new campaign in division three off to a good start, winning 26-10 at Pembrokeshire to put them top of the divisional table with twenty-nine points, three more than their nearest rivals, second placed Bedfordshire, who won 23-13 at Isle of Wight. A 21-15 home win against Montgomery and Radnor sees Breconshire in third place, five points off the top with twenty-four points.
Although Isle of Wight lost their home game against Bedfordshire 23-13, they took both of the men’s awards as Joe Hunt clinched the ‘A’ award for his 4-1 win over Barry Davies and 30.07 average and Daryl Hunt took the ‘B’ award for his 26.79 average and 4-1 success over Aiden O'Mahoney. For the ladies ‘A’, Gaynor Williams (Gwynedd) averaged 23.48 in a 3-0 win over Tina Rowlands (Wiltshire) and Breconshire’s Alannah Waters-Evans recorded a super 24.64 average in her 3-0 win over Sally Gamble (Montgomery and Radnor).

Warwickshire’s trip to the South-West to take on Cornwall at the Indian Queens Working Men’s Social Club, St. Francis Road, St. Columb, Cornwall. TR9 6QN began with a 3-2 win for Nina Bolt over Becky Curnow to put the ladies ‘B’ 1-0 up. Emma Dow replied for the hosts restoring parity with her similar 3-2 win against Denise Keyte. Jodie Rigg gave the away side the lead for a second time when she beat Jo Hazell 3-0, only to see the game levelled again in the fourth when Hannah Martyn won 3-1 against Kris Meek. A straight 3-0 win for Donna Pinch against Jacqui Champion saw Warwickshire go ahead for a third time and with a lady of the match performance from Kacie O’Connor in the final game, which she won 3-1 against Tyrian Jesse and averaged 20.49, the 4-2 result went to Warwickshire.
The men’s ‘B’ could not have wished for a better start as they sailed through the first half of the game winning all six games, wins were supplies by Dave Hill, Ryan Jackson, Carl Winters, Zac Prince, Mark Strong and Karl Reynolds who in turn accounted for Sam Hicks (4-2), Jay Willey (4-0), Simon Fletcher (4-3), Dan Craddock (4-1), Kevin Bray (4-1) and Josh Symons (4-1). Taking the match award was Mark Strong who in his win over Kevin Bray he averaged 27.22.
The pattern continued as the second session got underway, Mark Carter winning 4-0 against Kyle Willmott and Mark Martin having a 4-3 win over Aaron Rowe to put Warwickshire in an unassailable 8-0 lead before the hosts got their first stripe on the board when George Jones won 4-2 against William Naylor. Lloyd Jackson then took the lead to 9-1 with his straight 4-0 win over Troi Day. The last two games of the day were shared, Rhys Julian (Cornwall) winning 4-2 against Lee Miller prior to Adam Hancock taking the final score to 102 to Warwickshire with his 4-3 win over Ash Cran.
The opening three games of the women’s ‘A’ match all went with the first throw advantage, Marian Conway giving Warwickshire the early lead as she accounted for Laura Shepherd with a 3-1 result. Pauline Mead levelled the score when she beat Caroline Pike 3-1, only to see the away side forge ahead for a second time when Courtney Hine won 3-0 against Tracey Hancock. The pattern was broken in the fourth, the visitors opening up a 3-1 lead when lady of the match Wendy Adams handed out a 3-0 defeat to Sandra Allen and averaged 22.77. A 3-2 win for Hannah Meek over Teresa Brookshaw in the penultimate game secured the win for Warwickshire, the final score 4-2 to Warwickshire after Nikki Furse (Cornwall) won the final game against Kirsty Hinchliffe 3-1.
With a draw already secured for Warwickshire, the men’s ‘A’ required just one winner for an overll win for the weekend and that win came in the very first game as Martin Tonks won 4-3 against Tex Thomas. Rob Jane, with a 4-2 win over Jamie Hughes levelled the game before the away side added two further wins from Steve Hine and Gareth Braham who in turn accounted for Richard Craddock (4-1) and Shaun Burden (4-3). Sam Price took Mike Jones to a deciding leg but it was Cornwall’s Jones who got the 4-3 result and by the midway point it was level pegging at 3-3 after Simon Knowles added his 4-1 win over Lloyd Jackson to the home team’s tally.
Warwickshire had a cracking start to the second half wining the opening four games thanks to Noel Grant, Nigel Heydon, Matty Washbrooke and Dom Taylor who beat respective opponents Andrew Cook (4-0), Paul Ellis (4-1), Geoff Jenkins (4-3) and Lee Agar (4-1). Dom Taylor’s win over Lee Agar earned Warwickshire’s newcomer the man of the match award for a super average of 33.76. The last two games of the weekend went to the hosts as Matt Knowles won 4-1 against Wayne Mynard and Scott Hill beat Jack

West Midlands, newly promoted to the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division, had an opening day home fixture against Kent, which saw both ladies teams finish all-square at 3-3. The ‘B’ side game began with a win for Kent as Cara Broad won 3-2 against Shellbie Guest. The visitors lead was short-lived as Sarah Maybury won 3-1 against Tina Kennard and with a similar 3-1 win for lady of the match Kelly Aston (15.55) over Rebecca Garrett the home side were 2-1 up. Parity was restored in the fourth when Jeanette
Tilley beat Jade Wellings 3-2 but a draw was guaranteed in the fifth when Katherine Jenkins won 3-0 against Lisa Stefano. A 3-1 win for Natalie Berry (Kent) over Hannah Davies took the final score to 3-3.
The ladies ‘A’ got off to a good start as Jacqueline Trott won 3-2 against Julie Row and Kat McLean beat Stacey Dawkins 3-0 to put the hosts two up. However from 2-0 up the home side then found themselves trailing 3-2 as Kent’s Kelly Westlake, Millie Packer-Wood and Emma Martin in turn defeated Jacqueline Maiden (3-0), Evonne Taylor (3-0) and Claire Hobbs (3-2). Securing a share of the spoils for West Midlands was their lady of the match Gemma Barrett who in her 3-2 win over Jackie Holman averaged 21.89.
All of the first half games for the men’s ‘B’ match went with the first throw advantage with Kent taking the lead three times only to see the home team cancel it out on each occasion. Winners for Kent were David Heath, Lewis Venes and Ben Webster who had wins over Ian Stanton (4-1), Adam Teasdale (4-2) and Kian Rogers (4-2). Replying for the West Midlands were Kieran O’Mahoney who beat Richard Elms 4-1, man of the match Martin Price who defeated Dave Saint 4-2 with a 28.78 average and Will Beaden who won 4-3 against Hayden Robbie.
For the first time in the match the home team went ahead as the second session got underway, Jordan Craig beating Martin Goodin 4-2. The game was taken to 4-4 when Scott Lackford (Kent) won the eighth encounter with Cameron Baird 4-1, however with Luke Griffiths winning 4-3 against Craig Connor, Jay Woodhouse beating John Dyke 4-0 and Rob Thompson who won 4-0 against Michael Finch West Midlands were now in a winning 7-4 position. The last game saw Kent’s Peter Davies win 4-0 against Karl Hughes to put the final score at 7-5.
Ryan O’Connor opened for the men’s A’ and his 4-2 win over Steve Stacey gave West Midlands the early lead. However it didn’t last long as Paul Dawkins won 4-1 against Shaun Carroll to level the game. For a second time the hosts went ahead, this time it was Paul Price with his 4-1 win over Scott Artiss who gave them the 2-1 advantage and with 4-2 wins from Jack Aldridge and Scott Baker over respective opponents Nigel Payne and Daniel Todd, the home team were 4-1 up. At the halfway stage the score was 4-2 as Ross Lowe (Kent) won the sixth encounter against Alex Simmons 4-0.
West Midlands quickly moved into an unassailable 6-2 lead as Mark Craddock and Jon Platt in turn won 4-1 and 4-2 against Keith Montgomery and Lewis Venes before Kent had their best run of the match with three consecutive wins. Kieran O’Brien began the trio of wins when he won 4-1 against Glen McGrandle, James Davison helping to keep hopes alive for a draw with his 4-2 win over Callum Parkes and it was still looking good for the draw when Peter Allen beat Gavin Baker 4-3 to take the score to 6-5 to West Midlands. However,West Midlands kept their best till last as anchor man Richard Platt turned on a man of the match performance to beat Peter Gallacher 4-3 with an award winning average of 27.98 to give the men’s ‘A’ a 7-5 win.
The overall 20-16 win for the West Midlands saw them in fourth position in the divisional table but level on twenty-three points with all four teams above them, Cheshire, Humberside and London.

Black Country opener in the L-Style Division One was a home tie against Derbyshire but it didn’t get off to a very good start for the ladies ‘B’ as the visitors stormed into an unbeatable 3-0 lead as Samantha Evans won 3-0 against McKenzie Raine, Louise Rawson beat Paige Robbins 3-1 and Rach Bird won 3-0 against Stella Sims. Black Country’s first win came in the fourth as Doreen Hunt accounted for Emily Jones with a straight 3-0 win. Lady of the match Sarah-Jane Parker reduced the deficit even further when she won 3-2 against Jax Sweet with a 16.75 average and salvaging the draw was Demmi Titley who beat Lisa Davie 3-2 to put the final score at 3-3.
Sam Bissell opened up for the men’s ‘B’ and gave the home side the early lead with a 4-0 win, over Gary Fenn. A 4-2 win from Wes Smith over Mark Rollinson levelled the game before the hosts won the next two games 4-2 thanks to Andy Garratt and Matthew Lloyd who in turn defeated Ian Allcock and Marc Ellis. Lee Stanley pulled one back for Derbyshire when he beat Al Smith 4-3 but by the break Black Country had opened up a 4-2 lead as Mark Jones closed the half with a 4-3 win over Mick Smith.
As the second session got underway, Rhys Butler increased the home team’s lead to 5-2 when he won 4-2 against Dan Jackson and with a further 4-1 win from man of the match Ian Townsend who won 4-1 against Jamie Waterfield with a 24.56 average to guarantee, at the worst a draw as they were now leading 6-2. The win was delayed as Ben Holmes (Derbyshire) won 4-1 against Neil Steventon but only delayed until the tenth game as Wayne Hobday beat Jay Knowles 4-1 to open up a 7-3 lead. The last two games went to Derbyshire, Carl Frith winning 4-3 against Danny Chiswell and Jack Ryder beating Jake Shipley 4-2 to give a final score of 7-5 to Black Country.
For the Black Country’s ladies ‘A’ it was a weekend to quickly forget as the went down 5-1 with Chez Allcock the sole winner as she opened up with a 3-1 win over Carol Western with a 16.96 average. The remainder of the game was all Derbyshire’s as Jane Densley beat Kirsty Shaughnessy 3-1, Rachel Ayres won 3-2 against Tammy Chance, Jo Oldershaw had a 3-1 win over Abbey Hunt, Rose Mort won 3-0 against Heather Wright and Rebecca Hoyland beat Grace Angell 3-0.
The first two games of the men’s ‘A’ match both went to Black Country as Trev Brennan beat Nigel Daniels 4-3 and Jamie Rollinson won by the same margin against James Ruff. The following two games went to Derbyshire, Dan Ford and Paul Williams both winning 4-3 against respective opponents Dan Homer and Reece Colley. The last two games of the half once again went to the hosts as Michael Powell beat Darron Brown 4-3 and Alfie Busby won 4-0 against Steven Thompson.
As the second half began Steve Jones took the home side’s lead to 5-2 when he won 4-0 against Paul Redfern but the lead was reduced to 5-3 as Liam Ryde beat George Willetts 4-2. Harry Williams (Black Country) had a 4-3 win against Sean Lambert to put the home team within an ace of victory, a victory that was achieved in the very next game as man of the match Tom Bissell beat Jamie Hill 4-2 with a 29.34 average. The penultimate encounter went to Derbyshire as Dominic Harrison won against Aaron Colley only to see Keiron Bridgewater beat Jack Ryder 4-0 in the last game of the weekend to give Black Country an 8-4 victory.
The 19-17 win for Black Country sees them placed fifth in the league with twenty-twopoints which is just three behind leaders Merseyside.
