A Look Back In Time - Alan Towe 30.01.2002

It was not a good week end for our local counties as they played in the latest BDO Inter Counties Championship fixtures. Warwickshire, playing at the Belgrave Sports and Social, Tamworth against fellow premier league team Yorkshire finished on the wrong side of a 25-14 result. Both men’s teams went down 8-4 with Colin Fowler (32.33) and Darin White (28.38) taking the respective ‘A’ and ‘B’ team match awards. There were mixed fortunes for the ladies as the ‘B’ side lost 4-2, with Noreen Harris (20.31) their top player. The ‘A’ team won 4-2, needless to say Trina Gulliver was the lady of the match with a 23.83 average.

West Midlands also played at home in their division three game with Cleveland. But again it was not a good result. Angie Perry (21.55) and Teresa Johnson (16.70) were the sole winners for the ‘A’ and ‘B’ respectively. The men’s ‘B’ suffered a massive 10-2 defeat, Frank Johnson (25.83) their top man, while the ‘A’ team provided the only shining light of the weekend as they won 8-4. Ian Jones with his 32.31 average took the Sunday match award.

At the midway point of the Forest of Arden Winter League’s season three teams, Hobs Meadow, Red Arrows and Hobs Meadow Mixes are locked together at the top of the table with 16 points from 10 games. Brian Allen, with a 160 break helped Arrows to a 5-4 win over Mackadown Social, a feat emulated by Stechford Social’s Bill Townsend as his side beat Cock and Hens 8-1. Jimmy Gilfoyle hit a maximum in Solihull Borough Flights 7-2 victory over Farringdon Social.

The league’s singles knockouts were staged at the Sheldon Heath Social Club. Taking the ladies crown, without dropping a single leg throughout the competition was Hobs Meadow’s Noreen Harris. Noreen beat Cock and Hens Pat Hussey 2-0 in the final.

The men’s title went to Simon Edwards in an all Red Arrows final, Simon accounting for team mate Alan Price with a 2-0 scoreline to clinch his win.

----------------------------------

Highlander, leaders of the premier division of the Harborne and District Winter League had a close 5-4 victory over an unlucky Hobsons Choice outfit. Raven had an impressive 6-3 win against W.C.WMC, while Harborne Stores beat Ladywood Social 5-4 despite two 152 breaks from Stores J.Merrick.

In division one Village Stump proved to be too strong for Stonehouse Flights and ran out 8-1 winners. Pheasant had a 7-2 success against Highlander Ladies.

----------------------------------

After eight fixtures Saltley Flights are able to boast a 100% win record in the Small Heath Winter League. Nearest rivals Sheldon Heath Flights remain four points adrift following their 7-2 win at the Black Horse. In the Custard House contest, the ‘A’ side just got the 5-4 edge on the ‘B’.

----------------------------------

It was a case of top versus bottom in division one of the Longwood League, with Three Horse Shoes taking on the Wilnecote Club, the result was a surprising 4-4 draw. White Lion gained ground on the leaders with a 6-2 home win over Royal Oak (Polesworth). Lion are now three points behind Shoes with a game in hand.

Railway, top of the second division had a bye, but the chasing pair Plough and Harrow and Progressive Club had mixed fortunes. Plough lost 6-2 to Red Lion ‘B’ (Wilnecote) and Progressive Club won by the same margin against Royal Oak (Kingsbury).
