A Look Back In Time - Alan Towe 24.10.2001

Two great rivals, Red Arrows and Hobs Meadow met in the Forest of Arden Winter League, but even the advantage of the home board was not enough for Arrows to avoid a 5-4 defeat. Hobs, Harvester and Highwod share the same number of points at the top of the table, with Harvester ahead of the other two with a superior average. In this week’s game Harvester romped to an 8-1 home victory over Farringdon Social, while Highwood, with a maximum from Nigel Green, accounted for Old Bill and Bull with a 7-2 scoreline.

After a bye last week Hobs Meadow Mixes kicked off their campaign with a 5-4 win over the Cock and Hens.

In the premier division of the Harborne and District Winter League, Bartley Green Social Club were involved in a very entertaining match with the Raven. A total of 30 tons were scored in the match which Bartley won 7-2 to maintain their 100% record. Harborne Stores are also able to boast an unbeaten run after their 6-3 win at W.C.WMC.

E.Simpson recorded an eight darts leg for the George, but it was not enough as the hosts went down 5-4 to the Highlander. Hobsons Choice were another team to lose at home as the Punchbowl beat them 8-1.

Weoley Castle were in top form in division one, T.Walton breaking with 160 and chalking up an eight darts leg, while his team mates M.Poolton and T.Cahill each hit a 180. For their opponents, the Pheasant, F.Gaskin had a 152 break, but the all-important 8-1 result went to Weoley. Highlander ladies came up with a cracking 5-4 win over Stonehouse Flights, while in the local derby between Bartley Green F.C and Bartley Green Social Flights, the latter won 6-3.

Richie Shenton continues to lead the field in the Sportsmans Rest Double Top League, a 3-0 success against Tony Pedley giving him a total of 85 points from 22 games. Second placed Dave Platt lost ground on Shenton when he lost 2-1 to his nearest rival John Ainsworth, who hit two maximums. Ainsworth is now on the same 79 points as Platt with a game in hand. Stev Cain was another player to hit two 180’s unfortunately it was to no avail as he lost 2-1 to Tom Dillon. Cain then went on to hit another maximum against Lance Thompson, who also hit the top score, this time Cain won 2-1.

In the league’s singles knockout Steve Cain defeated Kevin Platt (180) 4-0 as did Lance Thompson in his tie with Tony Pedley. John Ainsworth had a 4-1 success against Paul Cummings (180), while Tom Dillon (180) and Richie Shenton (180) both won 4-4 against respective opponents Dave Platt and Rob South.
