A Look Back In Time - Alan Towe 17.10.2001

Hobs Meadow, reigning Forest of Arden Winter League champions got the new campaign off to a good start with a 7-2 success over Solihull Borough Flights, who were last season’s runners-up but playing under the banner of Silver Wings this year. So a winning start for Hobs, could they make it three championship wins in a row?

Paul Franks began on a personal high as he broke with 160, his team Harvester winning 7-2 at Makadown Social.

In the premier division of the Harborne and District Winter League Bartley Green Social Club came back from 4-3 down to beat an unlucky Highlander team. Biggest winners were Midland Red (who have now moved to the Punchbowl), they defeated W.C.WMC 8-1.

In the first division New Inns were also 8-1 victors with Avenue Social on the receiving end. A 160 break from T.Haymes helped Village Stump to a 6-3 against Bartley Green F.C.

Despite suffering a 2-1 defeat by Lance Thompson, Richie Shenton still holds on to pole position in the Sportsmans Rest Double Top League. Shenton was quick to bounce back as in his next fixture against second placed John Platt he won 2-1 giving him 80 points from 21 games, two more than Platt with a game in hand Steve Cain and Dave Platt both hit two maximums in their respective wins over Steve Hine and Derek Fardon. Other players hitting a 180 were Richie Shenton, Pat Koyce (2) and John Ainsworth.

In round one of the Longwood Winter League’s Open Cup, Dolphin and Red Lion ‘A’ (Wilnecote) had 5-3 wins in turn over the Railway and Cue Sports.

Old Oscott WMC head division one of the Four Oaks and District League with 6 points. In their most recent game against Good Hope Flights they chalked up a massive 8-1 win while second place Midland Red suffered a set-back to their title hopes going down 5-4 at home to the Sinners. Red now have four points as do the Anvil, who beat Plough and Harrow 6-3, and Boldmere who also won 6-3 at home to Safe Harbour.

In division two Bromford and the Cat and Fiddle both have six points, 100% win records and are dead level on average. In addition to this both teams also won 7-2 Bromford against the Pint Pot and Cat and Fiddle against the Saints.

8-1 was a popular scoreline in the Aston League as Heartlands, Emerald and KCA defeated in turn Hardy Spicer, Tennis Courts and SS Mary and Johns by that margin. J.Morris had a 160 break as his side Old Oscott WMC went down 6-3 at home to the Mitre.
