A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 2001-02-28

In the Forest of Arden Winter League there was a scare for leaders Hobs Meadow as in their away game against Mackadown Social they found themselves trailing by 3-0. However, they recovered and then went on to win 6-3 to give them a six points lead with six games to play. Stechford Social had a good 5-4 home win over Red Arrows, while Silver Wings with a 180 from Tom Keating and Highwood with a similar score from Paul Milmore both won 6-3 against respective opponents Harvester and Poachers Pocket.

In the Divisional Cup Hobs Meadow were again on form with a resounding 10-5 win over Mackadown Social and Highwood just got the 8-7 edge on Hobs Meadow Mixes. In the Shadow League Cup Poachers Pocket beat Warwick Aero 9-6 and Stechford Social won 8-7 against Cock and Hens.

The Harborne Winter League were engaged in the play off of their doubles knockout. The competition was well supportyed and produced some top class darts, none better than those from T.Cannon and E.Simpson (George) who won the title with a final 2-1 victory over P.Sinnett and N.Plumpton from the Hillyfields.

The league’s next Delegates meeting is this coming Sunday at the Stonehouse. All summer league delegates should attend to collect the fixtures for the forthcoming season.

The Ace of Clubs Charity team took on a representative team from the Harborne League at the Hillyfields in which the charity side won 8-4. The match raised a fabulous total of £280. Winners for the Ace of Clubs were P.James, C.Stokes, L.Newcombe, V.Byrne, J.Webster, S.Deery, S.Dwyer and B.Johnson. D.Marshall, C.O’Connor, L.Fithian and S.Edwards won for Harborne.

Dave Shorthouse is doing a grand job in his attempt to retain the Bass Breweries sponsored Minworth Social Individual League title. In his latest two games he has recorded a 3-0 win over Tony Whitehouse and a 2-1 success against Ian Humphries. Dave now has 128 points from 31 games, Tony Randell is second with 119 points from 30 games, but a careful eye should be kept on third placed Trevor Frost who despite being 14 points adrift of Shorthouse has no fewer than three games in hand, which could net him 15 points.

Hitting 180’s this week are Chris Packer (2), Barry Stephens, Alan Mayell, Trevor Frost, Dean Grainger, Robbie Earl, Richie Shenton, Tony Randell and Chris Packer.

No change at the top of the Small Heath Winter League with the top three teams all winning. Leaders Custard House, on 16 points beat bottom team Red Hill 5-4, while second placed Sheldon Heath Flights had a similar margin win over the Nest to give them 12 points. In third position is the Black Horse, another 5-4 success against Saltley Flights leaves them six points behind the top team.

A final reminder that this coming Sunday the Summer League will be holding their AGM at the Custard House, all interested teams should be represented.

There was an upset in Division One of the Longwood Winter League as leaders Dolphin lost 5-3 against the near bottom team Red Lion (Wilnecote). Nevertheless, Dolphin still hold on to pole position with 15 points, just one more than second placed White Lion ‘A’ who had a comfortable 7-1 win at the Queens Head.

Two teams, Railway and Wilnecote Club are locked at the top of division two each with 17 points. Railway are ahead on average but lost a little ground as they won 5-3 at the Red Lion (Polesworth), while the Wilnecote won 6-2 at home to the R.A.F.Club.
