A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 2001-02-21
A home tie against Glamorgan in the Premier Division of the BDO Inter Counties Championship saw Warwickshire chalk up their third win of the campaign. Playing at the Belgrave Sports and Social Club, Tamworth, the weekend did not get off to a good start. The women’s ‘B’ ended up on the wrong side of a 4-2 result with Denise Jones (17.37 lady of the match) and Sue Deery the only winners. The men’s ‘B’ also suffered a similar fate, going down 8-4, still seeking their first win after six of their nine fixtures have been played. Taking the match award was David Harris (29.82).
Sunday saw a complete turn around. The ladies recorded their first 6-0 whitewash of the season thanks to Pat Thornton, Debbie McPherson, Caroline Pike, Trina Gulliver (who yet again was the top lady with a 27.58 average), Julie Dwyer and Lesley Newcombe. Colin Fowler (29.51) was the men’s star as he helped them to a great 7-5 success to make it four consecutive wins and in the process an overall 19-17 victory to keep Warwickshire in the top alf of the table.
It was not good news in Division Two as the West Midlands lost 22-14 at Co Durham, their fifth defeat in six outings. Both ladies teams lost, the ‘A’ 4-2 and the ‘B’ 5-1, with Gill Cook (20.04) the ‘A’ teams match award winner for the second successive game and Ann Jones (15.30) accomplishing a similar feat for the ‘B’.
The men’s results were not much better as the ‘B’ side finished all square at six each and the ‘A’ went down 7-5. Ian Jones (33.40), as in the previous game was the ‘A’ teams top man and another Ian, this time Hartland (28.34) was the ‘B’ side’s award winner.
