Midland Red and Sportsmans Rest are battling it out for honours in division one of the Four Oaks and District League. Both teams have completed six of their scheduled fourteen fixtures and they have both lost just one of them. In the latest round of games Midland Red played hosts to Old Oscott Arrows, who prior to the match were third in the table. Despite maximum’s from Arrows men M.Compton and D.Higgins the Red’s came up with a vital 6-3 victory to keep them in pole position with a superior average on second placed Sportsmans Rest. Sportsmans had an away game against Anvil Nomads and returned with a close 5-4 win. Old Oscott Arrows have now dropped to fourth place behind Boot Flights who won 6-3 at Old Oscott WMC.

In division two a 7-2 success at home over the Plough keeps Deer’s Leap top of the table, but again only on average as Boldmere Sports are on the same eight points from a similar five games played. Top shots in the division were provided by J.West (Barn Social) and J.Kiernan (Acorn) who each recorded a 180.

As the number of fixtures remaining in the Brook Meadow Individual League fast run out Ian McFarlane still holds on to the number one spot and is six points ahead of his nearest rival former champion Mark Birch. Both players suffered setbacks in their most recent fixtures, McFarlane surprisingly going down 2-1 to tenth placed Bill Cadby and Birch despite hitting a maximum lost out by the same margin in his tie with Jay Murray, who lies in seventeenth position in the table.

Finding the three treble twenties this week were Carl Winters, Jason Evans and Mark Birch (2).

There were good away wins for all of the top three teams in the Harborne and District Winter League. Midland Red and Smethwick Labour Club had impressive 8-1 wins respectively at the Cock Inn and Avenue Social, while the George beat Stonehouse 7-2. R.O’Neill (Bartley Green F.C) had a 160 break as his side won their home game against the Pheasant 7-2.

In the other fixtures New Inns handed out a 9-0 whitewash to Quinton Members Club Flights, Bartley Green Social Club won their first game of the season, a 5-4 success against Quinborne, Raven had a comfortable 8-1 win against the Hillyfields and Thurlestone lost their home tie with Quinton Members Club 6-3.

The G.U.L.P. Charity League have played off their mixed doubles and ladies singles competitions. In the doubles Tigers duo Ross Macken and Emma Harris retained their title with a very close final 2-1 victory over team mates Matt Cooper and Noreen Harris.

The singles crown was lifted by Lion’s Dawn Duffy after narrowly overcoming the challenge of Helen Davis (Tigers) in the final, the scoreline 2-1.

This coming Sunday there will be a league meeting for the Sheldon and District Winter League at the Lea Hall Sports and Social Club beginning at 10.30am. Team secretaries should note that all singles and doubles entry forms, together with the entry fees should be handed in at this meeting. Also the entry forms for the Denis Houlders trophy should be handed to Alan Blythe at this meeting.
