An away game against Hampshire was the latest BDO Inter Counties Championships, premier division fixture for Warwickshire and they returned with a tremendous 24-15 win to place them third in the table with 91 points, just six adrift of leaders Cheshire and only four behind second placed Yorkshire.

There were highs and lows in Saturday’s games with the ladies going down 4-2 and the men winning 8-4. Taking the respective match awards were Betty Sinnett (20.04) and Tony Brown (32.67). In the ’A’ team games the ladies, aided by a 23.86 average from lady of the match Claire Bywaters, won 5-1, while the men finished honours even at 6-6, Steve Hine (28.920) collecting their top man award.

Tomorrow night the Sheldon and District Winter League will be playing off the quarter finals of their league cup. The full draw is, Premier Division:- Castle Vale Residents Association v Sheldon Dukes, St Annes v Saltley Amateur Gardeners, Three Horse Shoes v Highwood, Malt Shovel v British Telecom Club, Division One:- Lea Hall Sports and Social v Raven, Solihull Borough FC v Glebe Community Centre, Vaughans v Shard End Social, Pavilions v Harvester, Division Two:- Gunmakers Arms v Banbury Club, Sedgemere Flights v Old Bill and Bull, Yardley Ex Service v Sheldon SHoes, Sheldon and Marlboro v Victoria Flights.

The GULP Wednesday league played off their singles competition down to the last two players. Both winners from the preliminary round, V.Bourne and A.Forde went out in the next round, the quarter finals, Bourne losing out to B.Green and Forde beaten by J.Phipps. In the semi’s B.Green defeated J.Phipps 2-1 and from the other half of the draw, R.Dale beat J.Young 2-0. The final between Green and Dale will be played on the 14th April 2004.

Queens ’A’ have been ousted from the number one spot in division two of the Longwood league by their local rivals Queens ’B’. The ’A’ side suffered their first defeat of the campaign as they finished on the wrong side of a 5-3 result at the Kettlebrook, while the ’B’ team won 5-3 at home to the Mercian, giving them a total of ten points, one more than their rivals.

In the first division, last week’s leaders, Winning Post could only manage a 4-4 draw at the Dolphin and with the Globe winning 6-2 at home to Two Gates Club, the three teams, Winning Post, Globe and Dolphin are locked together on the same eleven points.

On the agenda for the Harborne and District Winter league was the first round of their league cup. Biggest winners of the round were W.C.WMC and New Inns, who in turn chalked up convincing 6-1 wins over Bartley Green Social Flights and Avenue Social. Smethwick Labour Club were not far behind as with a 5-2 verdict they accounted for Hobsons Choice. The remainder of the fixtures all finished with a close 4-3 margin, going into the hat for the next round are, Travellers Rest, Woodcock, the George, Raven, Coopers Arms and Highlander at the expense of Old Mill, Pheasant, Hillyfields, Midland Red, Quinborne Flights and Stonehouse Flights.

H.McKeown (Woodcock) notched a maximum in his teams win at the Pheasant.
