With a crushing 6-1 win over Smethwick Labour Club, Midland Red have reduced the deficit to four points on the George, leaders of the division one table in the Harborne and District Winter league. In addition Midland Red have a game in hand on the top team and a further win could close the gap to only two points. On the same ten points as the Reds are Raven, who beat W.C.WMC 4-3 and Hillyfields, who by the same scoreline accounted for Quinborne. However, Raven and Hillyfields have both played one more fixture than Midland Red.

Coopers Arms are in pole position in the second division on twelve points. They were involved in a close 4-3 affair at Harborne Stores, but came out as winners. Cock Inn, Harborne Stores and Pheasant are locked together on ten points.

West Midlands most recent division three match in the BDO Inter Counties Championships was a home tie against Montgomery and Radnor. After a close 19-17 defeat at the hands of Nottinghamshire in their last outing, they were looking for a quick return to winning ways and that was exactly what they got as they won 25-11. Saturday’s games finished all square with both the men and women ending the day with a draw. Taking the match awards were Jamie Parsons (27.83) and Teresa Johnson (15.72).

The ‘A’ teams were in fine form as the women handed out a 6-0 whitewash to put them top of their table. Angie Perry was the top player with an 18.49 average. A 28.90 average from Darren Williams helped the men to a 10-2 victory, moving them into second place behind County Durham.

In the overall promotion table West Midlands are now in third position, ten points adrift of second placed Cornwall and a further two points behind leaders County Durham.

The Small Heath Winter league began with convincing 7-2 wins for both Custard House and Heartlands Club, who in turn defeated Gunmakers Arms and McVeighs. Best game in the opening fixtures went to Ian McLean from the Custard House, who checked out in just eight darts. Top score of 180 was hit by another Custard House player Charlie Griffiths.

The Globe produced the biggest shock of the week in division one of the Longwood Winter league as they beat Winning Post by a massive 7-1. As a result Globe have taken over the number one spot with 13 points and Winning Post, with 11 points and a game in hand, have dropped to third place behind the Dolphin, who could only manage a 4-4 draw at Red Lion ‘B’. At the other end of the table bottom team Red Lion ‘A’ were also involved in a 4-4 draw with their nearest rivals Plough and Harrow.

Queens ‘A’ have returned to the top of the second division table with a 5-3 win against the Three Horse Shoes, while Queens ‘B’, who drew 4-4 with Kettlebrook have dropped to second, level on points with their ‘A’ side but just one leg of average seperating the two teams.

Malt Shovel are the early leaders in the GULP Wednesday league. A 4-3 win against the Brewer and Baker gives the Shovel a total of eight points, two more than the chasing pack of three, Brewer and Baker, Great Western and Victoria.
