King Crowns Return to Form with Spanish Title
After a quiet year for Winmau’s Mervyn King he claimed the Sunday Spanish Darts Trophy, PDC Pro Tour Event Tile. Although seeming somewhat out of sorts in recent times, The King’s hard work on the practise board and professionalism off it has shown signs of paying off recently. A superb performance in the Championship League of darts was somewhat hidden by the attention given to The Power’s superb final day, in addition Mervyn’s floor form had been very promising in recent weeks.
Going into Saturday’s event with returning confidence and a quiet belief, thus a third round defeat to Alan Tabern was a little disappointing, however plenty of legs played and some good solid wins made optimism the order of the day for Sunday. How well placed that confidence was, wins over a Spanish qualifier and Steve Maish for the loss of only four legs boded well. The defeat of, recent dark horse, Van de Ryik 6-3 was well placed as the heat and other distracts seemed to take their toll on others in the field. Merv then stepped up a gear at the perfect time and strong wins over Ronnie Baxter, Colin Osbourne & Jamie Caven saw Mervyn reach the final in fine shape. The defeat of `Warrior’ Wes Newton 6-3 with a 136 finish to claim the title in style.
The Weekend could quite easily be subtitled – The Return of The King!
