Birmingham Mail - A Midland Round-up by Alan Towe - 2023-03-01

This coming weekend Warwickshire County Darts Organisation will be hoping to follow up their recent 24-12 win over Glamorgan with a win away to Kent at the 1 in 6 Community Club, Northwood Road, Tonbridge, Kent, TN10 3HH. Currently Warwickshire are sixth in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League with 127 points while their hosts are languishing at the foot of the table with 84 points, a big win for the Bears could well see them move up into the top three of the division.

Lining up for Warwickshire will be Men’s ‘A’:- Jamie Atkins, Gareth Braham, Kevin Dowling, Noel Grant, Dave Hill, Steve Hine, Jamie Hughes, Tom Martin, Ian McFarlane, Wayne Mynard, Jack Wareing, Matty Washbrooke, Men’s ‘B’:- Mark Carter, Nigel Heydon, Pete Hughes, Mark Martin, Lee Miller, Will Naylor, Sam Price, Karl Reynolds, Noah Rose, Ian Shaw, Mark Strong, Jenson Walker, Reserves:- Carl Green, Adam Hancock, Dave Honey, Scott Hope, Mark Tomlinson snr, Martin Tonks, Chris Wickenden, Carl Winters, Women’s ‘A’:- Marian Conway, Natalie Gilbert, Sue Gulliver, Tammy Montgomery, Caroline Pike, Donna Pinch, Women’s ‘B’:- Nina Bolt, Courtney Hine, Angela Jones, Melanie Jones, Chloe McKivett, Hannah Meek, Reserves:- Wendy Adams.

An 18-18 draw in a rearranged fixture with Worcestershire has seen West Midlands move up from a next to bottom position to fourth in the L-Style Division One of the UKDA National League, they are on 116 points which is some 31 short of leaders Derbyshire. This coming weekend they will play what will be their seventh of a scheduled nine fixtures when they travel to take on Surrey at the Central Ward Club, 55 Ashridge Way, Morden, Surrey, SM4 4ED. The home side are some twelve points behind their visitors and lying just two places off the bottom of the division. After what has not been the best of starts for the West Midlands they could well, with good results in the remaining three games still produce a late push for promotion.

The Black Country are riding high in Division Two of the UKDA National League, top of the table with 146 points and they have a huge lead of eighteen over their nearest rivals, second placed Tyne and Wear. This coming weekend in their home game they will face a big challenge from Wiltshire who are also pressing for promotion, they are currently third in the table with 124 points just four short of Tyne and Wear who have an away game against bottom of the division Gloucestershire. A win for Black Country would keep them well on course for promotion, which if that comes to fruition would see them have been promoted for two consecutive seasons, no mean feat.

With all of the domestic fixtures completed in the Kings Norton League and Copper Fox acclaimed champions with a total of forty-two points, six more than runners-up Bournebrook and a massive thirty-six more than Kings Heath who took the Wooden Spoon, the league staged the semi-finals of their League Cup. Northfield and Thurlestone finished third and fourth in the league both on thirty-four points with Northfield having just four legs of average to the good on their rivals. The two teams met in the cup semis with the close 4-3 result going in favour of Thurlestone. The second of the last four play-offs saw Rubery Social Club, who finished their campaign fifth in the table beat runners-up Bournebrook 5-2.

In the Consolation Cup semis both games finished with a 5-2 result as Cock Inn beat Coppice and Bourneville defeated Kings Norton Ex Serviceman’s Club.

Old Oscott Arrows are fourth in the division on the same fourteen points as Bishop Vesey after they were another team to lose 5-4 at home, their victors being next to bottom of the table Golden Hind Lions.

Division two leaders Oscott Social sailed close to the wind away to fellow title contenders and third in the division St Thomas Arrows as at 4-2 up they required just one more win to take the points but the home side rallied and levelled the match at 4-4 before Oscott Social Club took the final game 2-1.
