AWESOME THORNTON VICTORIOUS IN GERMANY BY Point Media (UK)
Red Dragon star Robert Thornton won his first European Tour title after hitting top form in Dusseldorf, Germany last weekend.
The Scottish ace defeated Belgium’s Kim Huybrechts in the final to win the European Darts Open.
Thornton, who had defeated Dimitri van den Bergh to reach the final day, saw off Australia’s Simon Whitlock in the last 16 before sealing a 6-4 success against Jelle Klaasen to reach the semi-finals.
There, he produced the performance of the tournament to claim a fabulous 6-1 triumph against James Wade, in which ^The Thorn^ averaged almost 112.
And he continued to play brilliantly in the final, posting a 106 average in a 6-2 defeat of Huybrechts.
"I^m really pleased with how I played and I^m over the moon to win," said Thornton who completed the victory with a 116 finish.
"I seemed to get better as the weekend went on and it is a great feeling to win a European event because they are not easy.
"This sets up my confidence well for the Matchplay and the rest of the year."
Thornton is the second Red Dragon ambassador to win a PDC ranking title in 2015 after fellow Scotsman Peter Wright won a Players Championship in May.
Both will be in action at the World Matchplay at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, which begins on Saturday.
His win in Germany saw former UK Open Champion Thornton leapfrog Whitlock in the world rankings, moving up to eighth thanks to his £20,000 success.
