A LOOK BACK IN TIME - ALAN TOWE 25.09.2002

It was a good start to the 2002-2003 season for both of our local counties in the BDO Inter Counties Championships. Warwickshire paying at home in the premier division to Greater London registered a 24-12 victory. There were terrific 5-1 wins for both ladies teams, with Clare Bywaters (20.59) and Dawn Barnes (17.48) taking the respective A and B match awards.

There were mixed fortunes for the men as the ‘A’ finished all square at six each, Scott Mitton their top man with a 31.31 average, while the ‘B’ secured an 8-4 win with their man of the match Colin Laffar (28.90).

West Midlands took on Pembrokeshire at home in division four and began their fight for promotion with a 22-14 success. Janet Hubbard (17.16) and Teresa Johnson (15.99) were the A and B ladies of the match as both of their teams suffered 4-2 defeats.

The men’s teams chalked up 9-3 wins with Richard Foster amazingly taking both the A and B awards. He averaged 24.90 on Saturday and followed that with a 27.94 on Sunday. That’s a feat that does not occur very often, well done Richard.

Fourteen points is the difference between the top two players in the Minworth Social Individual League, leader Peter Allen has 152 points, while Mark Hollyoake has 138. Despite recording a 2-1 win over Harvey Tebble Hollyoake’s cause was not helped at all this week when he found himself on the wrong side of a 3-0 scoreline against Pat Koyce. Allen, meanwhile was securing his thirty third win in thirty five outings as with a 3-0 result he accounted for Colin Farrington.

----------------------------------

St Annes, last season’s Sheldon and District Winter League premier division champions, were beaten first time out as they lost 5-4 at home to Fordbridge Social. Barry Cowie had a nine darts game for Fordbridge. Newly promoted Hobs Meadow found the going tough as they lost 6-3 to Three Horse Shoes. Sheldon Dukes, the other promoted team got the season off to a good start with a 6-3 win against Castle Vale residents, Mark Birch hitting a 180 and registering an eight darts leg.J.Randell had a 160 break as Saltley Amateur Gardeners beat the Raven 8-1 and Malt Shovel’s V.Bourne hit a maximum in his team’s 7-2 win at the Hen and Chickens.

In division one Glebe Community Centre lost the first game at Banbury Club, but then stormed back to grab an 8-1 victory. Newly promoted British Telecom Club had a winning 5-4 start against Sheldon Social, while a 180 from C.Turner (Shard End RBL Flights) was not enough for his side to avoid a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the EBAHA outfit.

----------------------------------

It’s still neck and neck at the top of the Small Heath Summer League, with Saltley Flights and Black Horse both on 22 points from 14 games, only average separating them. Saltley had a 6-3 home win over Red Devils, while Black Horse won by the same margin at Custard House ‘B’.

----------------------------------

No change at the top of the Longwood Summer League as the first three teams all recorded wins. Leaders Red Lion ‘A’, on 26 points, had a comfortable 7-1 home win over Cue Sports Club. Second placed Dolphin, two points adrift of the top won 6-2 at the Plough and Harrow and third in the table White Lion, a further one point behind Dolphin, won 7-1 against Two Gates Club.
