A Look Back In Time - Alan Towe 20-06-2001

A re-arranged fixture between Bartley Green Social Club and Midland Red has decided where the Harborne and District Winter League title will go. Some fine throwing from both teams produced a 7-2 result in favour of Bartley Green, the new premier division champions.

Despite defeat in the winter league Midland Red are doing quite nicely thank you in the Harborne 401 Summer League. In a thrilling 42 tons, top of the table clash at the George, Midland Red, with a 6-3 win, took their unbeaten record to the season’s halfway mark. Now with a total of 16 points Red are six points ahead of the George who are second with a match in hand. E.Simpson hit a maximum for the George.

In division two Kings Highway with an 8-1 victory over the Coronation Club also reached the midway point without defeat. Two points behind the leaders Stores with a 160 break from J.Kearns and a 13 darts game by C.Walsh beat Village Stump 7-2.

No fewer than eleven 180’s were recorded in the latest round of fixture’s in the Minworth Social Individual League. Notching up the top score were, John Ainsworth (2), Trevor Frost (2), Dawn Barnes, Dave Shorthouse, Alan Mayell, Derek Mountjoy, Mick Bagley, Steve Brindley and Tom Dillon.

Two 2-1 wins over Steve Hawkes and Steve Davis have seen Scott Mitton reinstated to pole position in the league with a total of 63 points. However, hot on his heels is reigning champion Dave Shorthouse who, with a 3-0 success over Derek Mountjoy and a 2-1 win against Brian Brooks is in second spot, just two points adrift.

The “Ace of Clubs” charity team will be in action again this coming Friday when they will take on the Bromford Drive Municiple Community Association. Match play will commence at around 8-30pm and entrance is free.

In the semi finals of the Small Heath Summer League’s Knockout Cup Saltley Flights chalked up a convincing 7-2 win over Red Hill, while Montgomerys had a much closer 5-4 success against Sheldon Heath Flights.

In the league’s Upside Down Cup Custard House ‘B’ got the better of their ‘A’ side with a 5-4 result.

With a final victory over P.J.Sweat, K.Haddon has won the division one singles title in the Longwood Winter League. The division two crown went to A.Comerford with G.Day the runner up.

Three Horse Shoes are the early pacesetters in group one of the Sheldon and District Summer League with two wins from as many games. In their latest encounter they beat Iron Horse 5-3, J.Green producing a tremendous 160 outshot in the match.

In group two, for the second successive match M.Hicks (Sheldon Social Dukes) has hit a maximum. His team have had mixed fortunes as they lost the season’s curtain raiser against Brook Meadow, 5-3, and then, by the same scoreline beat Sheldon Social. There was also consecutive 180’s in group three where C.Busby (Solihull Borough Whingers) hit a 180 against both Shard End RBL and Hobs Meadow. N.McCrave was another group three player to find the three treble twenties.

Entry forms are now available for the ever popular ‘Midland Open’ being staged at the Barras Social Club, Coventry Street, Coventry on Sunday 14th October the event will carry a top prize of £750 with cash awards down to the last sixteen players.

Congratulations go to an old friend and former team mate of mine Moss Turner. Moss recently won a phone in competition on local Beacon Radio and ended up with something of a very unusal Father’s Day prize ..... a free VASECTOMY!
