A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 1999-12-01

Warwickshire made it three wins in a row when last weekend, in division one of the BDO Inter Counties Championship, they won at home 29-10 against Lincolnshire. Playing at the Belgrave Sports and Social Club, Tamworth, Warwickshire got off to a fine start when the ladies ‘B’ team beat their counterparts 5-1 with Carol Weston taking the match award with a 19.63 average. The men’s side were also winners, chalking up an 8-4 success, Colin Laffar (33.07) their top man.

Sunday’s results were a carbon copy of the previous day. The ladies, inspired by a magnificent performance from Trina Gulliver won 5-1. Trina gave her opponent Tracy Wikinson no chance whatsoever. In the first leg she hit 135-100-100-130 and checked out on double eighteen for a tremendous 13 darts leg. She followed that with scores of 180-140 and 100 and took the second in 15 darts. Completing her 3-0 victory Trina had top scores of 100-100-100 and 105 in the third leg, which she won in 16 darts for a fabulous 34.16 average. To round off the weekend the men’s ‘A’ won 8-4, Kevin Dowling taking the match award with his 32.86 average.

West Midlands still seeking their first win of the campaign in division two, travelled to Cheshire. Gill Cook (19-03) was the only winner as the ‘B’ side lost 5-1. The men’s ‘B’ also found themselves on the wrong side of an 8-4 scoreline, Mark Wellings (28.52) the top man of the four winners.

Sunday’s games began more promisingly, the ladies recorded their first win of the season, 4-2 with Angie Perry (22.84) their top player. Ian Jones (31.98) took the men’s award as they continued their unbeaten run with a 9-3 victory and in the process rescuing a share of the points when all appeared lost.

A 180 from S.Roe helped the George hold on to pole position in the premier division of the Harborne and District Winter League as they won their top of the table clash away to Bartley Green Social Club 6-3. Raven recorded their first win of the season when at the Golden Cup they won 5-4.

Stonehouse continue as leaders of division one and at the same time maintained their unbeaten run with a massive 8-1 win at the Quinborne. D.Hempenstall (Hobsons Choice) had a 160 break as his team won 7-2 at home to Bartley Green Social Flights.

Division two’s unbeaten leaders, Highlander, proved too good for Harborne Stores and ran out 7-2 winners. Village Stump snatched a 5-4 away win against an unlucky Highlander Ladies.

With one game to the halfway stage in the Forest of Arden Winter league, reigning champions Red Arrows are in the number one spot, thanks to Hobs Meadow. Prior to the latest fixtures Stechford Social were the only remaining undefeated team and were leading the field. Playing at Hobs Meadow, Stechford lost by an amazing 8-1and are now second to Arrows on average, both teams having lost one game. Then comes three teams, Hobs Meadow, Silver Wings and Cocks and Hens who have all lost three games.

In the Amber Windows League Heartlands C.Jones had an eleven darts leg as his side chalked up a 9-0 whitewash over Lyndhurst. J.West (Vauxhall Social) found the three treble twenties in his teams 6-3 win at home to the Woodman, while Bagot Arms had a convincing 8-1 win in their home tie with the Seventh Trap.

On the agenda for the Small Heath league was the Knockout Cup. Gables, with a 180 from G.Mullinger beat Montgomery’s 5-4. Sheldon Flights won by the same margin in their encounter with the Victoria, while Saltley Flights had the biggest win of the round, 6-3 against Red Hill.

There were 7-2 wins for Malt Shovel and Glebe Community Centre in division two of the Sheldon and District Winter league against respective opponents Lyndon Arms and Shard End Social Flights. For Malt Shovel F.Goldbey broke with 160 and for the Glebe R.Fenton hit a maximum. A.McCrave (Smiths Wood Snooker Club) in the premier division, was another player to break with 160, however his team lost 5-4 to Sheldon Heath Social Dukes.

There was a top of the table clash in the Warwickshire Men’s Super League, leaders Tamworth taking on fourth placed Birmingham Vauxhall. The result was a 6-2 victory for the latter. There was a close between Birmingham Midland Red and Coventry Howitzers which finished all square at four each. Biggest win of the week went to Coventry Bishopsgate who beat bottom of the table Warwick Town 7-1.
