A LOOK BACK IN TIME - ALAN TOWE 11.12.2002
There was a top of the table clash in division two of the Harborne and District Winter League this week, when second placed Hobsons Choice played at home and took on third in the table Smethwick Labour Club. The result was a close 5-4 win for Smethwick, which has taken them above their rivals in the table, but Hobsons do have the advantage of a game in hand and are level on ten points with Smethwick. P.Sandall (Smethwick Labour Club) recorded a 160 break.
Division three also provided a top of the table encounter, with the top two teams, Cock Inn and Travellers Rest doing battle on the Cock’s board. With both teams on ten points a close result was expected. However, that proved to be not the case as the Cock romped to a 7-2 victory t put them two points clear.

Round one of the Challenge Cup was on the Longwood League’s fixture card. Current league leaders, Red Lion ‘A’, strolled to a convincing 9-0 win at the Globe, while Dolphin, Two Gates Club and White Lion all won 7-2 against respective opponents Cue Sports Club, Plough and Harrow and Jolly Sailor. Red Lion ‘B’ beat Gate Inn 6-3 and the Queens Head won 5-4 against Mercian.

Good wins for both Shannons and Black Horse ‘A’ in the Camp Hill League, both of them winning 8-1 in turn against Red Devils Club and Black Horse ‘B’.

The Small Heath League have been engaged in the first round of their K.O. Cup. Three of the four fixtures finished at 6-3, with wins for Heartlands Club, Brewer and Baker and Black Horse, at the expense of Ward End Ex Service Club, Gables Tavern and the Gunmakers. Red Devils Club defeated Custard House 5-4.

Only average separates the top three teams in the premier division of the Sheldon and District Winter League, St Annes, following their 8-1` win at Hobs Meadow are in pole position, with Malt Shovel, who beat Castel Vale Residents Association 6-3 second, three legs behind. A further one leg adrift is Fordbridge Social, who suffered a surprising 5-4 defeat at the Iron Horse.
In division one, third placed Glebe Community Centre were part of a shock result as they went down 5-4 at Shard End RBL.
Players achievements this week, 160 breaks for D.Cooper (Malt Shovel) and M.Birch (Sheldon Dukes), maximums were provided by A.Hutchings, B.Vines (Highwood) and I.Durrington (Small Heath Gardeners).

The newly formed H.O.P.E. fundraising squad, had a great night at the Good Hope Social Club, where they raised a terrific amount of £781, of which £457 was donated to Nikki Stanton, which together with £560 already donated by Cadbury workers, will go towards buying Nikki an electric wheelchair. The other £324 from the night will be go to local Birmingham hospitals for various medical equipment anyone wanting the H.O.P.E. squad to raise funds for their charity should speak to Bill Morris 0n 07977-933030

A final reminder that this coming Saturday, the Cherry Tree Sports and Social Club, will be hosting the Cherry Tree Darts Open 2002. The event, for a modest £5 entry fee carries a first prize of £600, with cash prizes down to the losing semi-finalists. The competition is being staged in an effort to raise funds for Warwickshire Youth Darts.

Two teams, Cock and Hens and Farringdon Social, both seeking their first win of the season in the Forest of Arden Winter League met this week and it was the Cock and Hens who broke their duck. A 5-4 home win now leaves only Farringdon and Old Bill and Bull without a win. At the other end of the table, Highwood Arrows with 12 points stay in pole position as a result of their 6-3 win at the Old Bill and Bull. Then come three teams on 10points, Hobs Meadow, Highwood and the Glades.
