A Look Back in Time - 21.09.2005
For Warwickshire it was a long journey south to take on Kent in their premier division curtain raiser for the new BDO Inter Counties Championship season. Unfortunately it was not a good start to the campaign as three of the four teams lost, the only ray of sunshine was a 3-3 draw by the ladies ‘B’ side.
Betty Sinnett (19.78) was the ‘B’ teams lady of the match, while Brian Jones took the honours for the men’s game as they went down 8-4. Sunday’s games saw the ladies ’A’ lose 4-2 with Viki Franklin (20.03) their top player and Lesley Newcombe the only other winner. The men finished on the wrong side of a 7-5 result. Man of the match and anchor man Tom Aldridge was in fine form. He lost the first leg after only three throws of 100-101 and 100 as his counterpart Paul Wanstall checked out in twelve darts, 140-100-100 and a 161 outshot. Tom bounced back to win 3-1 in 15-13 and 14 darts dart’s for a tremendous 35.37 average.

After a 7-2 home win over Victoria Flights, Custard House head the Small Heath League with four points from two games. Innisfree and Gunmakers Arms are both level on points with Custard House but trail slightly on average. Innisfree had a 6-3 win at Victoria Inn, while the Gunmakers beat Bromford Bridge Members Club ’B’ 5-4. Biggest win of the week went to Victoria 301 Club, who had a massive 8-1 success over Wagon and Horses.
In addition to league affairs, the Small Heath League recently took on the GULP and Sheldon Charity team. The outcome was a close 8-7 verdict to the charity side, but the biggest winner was charity as a total of £76.66 was realised from the event. The only disappointment from the league’s point of view was the fact that very few of their members took the trouble to turn out for the game.

There was heartbreak for Bournbrook Arrows in division two of the South West Birmingham Clubs Summer League. Playing at home against Tascos Brunswick they chalked up a 4-3 win, which their members thought was enough to maintain the second division status. However, Longbridge 26’ers, who lost 4-3 at Tascos Social finished on the same points as Arrows, but three legs of average to the good and just escaped the drop. Barry Wolstencroft was on the mark for Tascos Social as he recorded a maximum.

With three fixtures completed in the Tamworth Cue Sports League just one leg of average separates the top three teams in division one. Queens ’A’ lost their unbeaten record as their nearest rivals Dolphin. Dolphin won 5-3 at the Queens, but despite losing they hold on to pole position. Dolphin are now level on points and average with the Globe, who won 5-3 at Two Gates Club.
Three Horse stretched their 100% record to three games in division two and remain two points ahead of both Queens ‘B’ and Royal Oak. Horse Shoes beat Mercian 6-2, while Queens ‘B’ lost for the first time this season going down 5-3 at the Park In. Royal Oak defeated Hopwas Club 5-3.
