Wright Wins on Night 2
Peter Wright was amongst those to reach the Last 16 of the 2023 World Grand Prix in Leicester, claiming success over World Championship Semi Finalist Gabriel Clemens 2-0 in sets. Luke Humphries rounded up the nightâ€™s action including 4 180s in beating former winner Daryl Gurney 2-0 at the Morningside Arena.
Defending champion Michael van Gerwen defeated Josh Rock 2-0 to continue his quest for a 7th success in the double start competition, missing just 2 darts at double in recording a checkout rate of 75%.
Joe Cullen opened the night with a 2-0 victory over Mike de Decker to reach the Last 16, getting a second 1st Round win over The Real Deal this year having also claimed success at the World Matchplay.
World Number 3 Wright included 50% finishing rates in both sets against Gabriel Clemens, winning both by a score of 3-1 on Night 2. Snakebite has seen a return to form in more recent weeks, reaching the Semi Finals on the Pro Tour and in the World Series of Darts Finals, as he now hunts a first success in the Grand Prix.
Peter reached the Final in the 2018 staging losing out 5-2 against Michael van Gerwen, despite averaging 3 points higher than the Green Machine at the Citywest Hotel.
The Red Dragon player advances to face Ryan Searle after Heavy Metal defeated Australian Number 1 Damon Heta 2-1 earlier in the night. The pair met at the recent World Matchplay, with Ryan coming out on top at the Last 16 stage in Blackpool.
Michael van Gerwen averaged 95.74 despite not hitting a 180 in his 2-0 win over Josh Rock but impressed on his doubling having missed a single dart at the outer ring in each of his set wins.
Mighty Mike will be satisfied with his nightâ€™s work to advance to the next round in his title defence having claimed 6 World Grand Prix trophies already, going through to face Masters Champion Chris Dobey who beat Dimitri van den Bergh 2-0.
Luke Humphries was one of the form players coming into the World Grand Prix having picked up tournament titles on the Pro Tour and Euro Tour, whilst reaching the Final of the recent Hungarian Darts Trophy hitting 2 170s and a 9 darter in his campaign in Budapest.
Cool Hand Luke defeated 2017 winner Daryl Gurney in the nights curtain raiser 2-0 including 4 180s and 7 140s, winning a last leg decider in the 2nd set to advance in Leicester.
The Englishman ranked as the Number 6 Seed for the tournament, goes through to face Luke Woodhouse after he stunned recent Players Championship 23 winner Dave Chisnall 2-0 in the second match of the night.
2020 Quarter Finalist Joe Cullen continues his hunt for a first success in the competition, with a 2-0 opening round victory over Mike de Decker, winning his first leg of the match with a Shanghai: 120 checkout at the Morningside Arena.
The former Masters winner will face Ross Smith in the 2nd Round, after Smudger came through a 2-0 winner against former Grand Prix winner Jonny Clayton.
