Thornton adds Seniors Matchplay crown!
With victories over Brian Dawson, Terry Jenkins, Martin Adams, and Phil 'The Power' Taylor who has reached back-to-back finals without winning a title as the greatest player of all time to many continues to wait for glory, Thornton has demonstrated that he is the man to beat on the WSDT Tour once more this weekend in Hull.
Taylor, who was going for his first Seniors championship, seized control of the match early on, building leads of 4-2, 6-4, and 7-5.
Thornton launched his comeback with a 13-darter in leg 13, and even though Taylor came within one leg of winning the match, the 16-time World Champion blew several match darts, allowing the Scot to force a tie-break.
Thornton reclaimed the lead at 9-8, and when Taylor tied the score once more, the previous winner of the UK Open and the World Grand Prix hit an 81 on the bullseye to retake the lead.
The Thorn's 100 finish offset Taylor's 82 checkout to make the score 11-10. He then duly completed the victory in the following leg to avoid the necessity for a sudden death leg.
After the Final Robert said, “to win it, especially against the 16-time champion of the World, you can’t ask for anything sweeter than that,” said Thornton.
“Phil says he’s not practicing – don’t kid me! He’s still practicing, he wants to win these, everybody does. My biggest aim is to get my PDC Tour Card back and if I wasn’t to do it, my biggest aim after that is to defend the titles I’ve won and maybe win more.”
