Double Delight for Thornton

Robert Thornton enjoyed an excellent weekend in Wigan, where he won both of the Pro Tour events thanks to some stunning displays.

The Scottish ace, who has leapt back up to ninth on the PDC’s Order of Merit after scooping £20,000 prize in money in 48 hours, defeated Keegan Brown and Terry Jenkins in the respective finals of Players Championships 7 and 8.

Thornton claimed his second and third titles of 2013, having won Players Championship 6 last month, to complete a hat-trick of consecutive triumphs at Robin Park.

"I’m absolutely chuffed to bits,” said Thornton, who also defeated Dave Chisnall in the Premier League on Thursday.

"It’s been a fantastic few days. Everything has just clicked and gone right for me and where I might have been unlucky earlier in the year, things have gone my way.

"I’m proud of what I’ve done as not many players have won both Pro Tours in one weekend, let alone three in a row, but I’m already thinking about my next match.

"My form is pretty consistent of late and the signs are good for the rest of the year.”

Thornton began his route to Saturday’s success with early victories over Kevin Thomas, John Part and Dave Ladley before defeating seven-time major winner James Wade 6-1 with a 103 average.

He then saw off Kim Huybrechts to reach the semi-finals, where he overcame fellow Scot Gary Anderson 6-3.

Thornton clinched victory by defeating youngster Brown 6-5 in a thrilling final.

Sunday saw the 2012 UK Open winner kick off his charge with wins against Ryan Palmer, James Richardson and Dean Winstanley.

‘The Thorn’ edged past Justin Pipe before averaging 101 in both his quarter and semi-final victories against Darren Webster and Lakeside World Champion Stephen Bunting.

Thornton completed his fantastic double by winning another exciting final, this time seeing off Jenkins 6-4 – a victory which he completed by taking out 121 on the bull.

Thornton will return to Premier League Darts action on Thursday evening, when he takes on Adrian Lewis in Newcastle.
