Lancashire v Warwickshire
Warwickshire County Darts Organisation began the New Year as they ended the old one with a defeat. Following previous wins over West Midlands and Cheshire their final game of 2018 saw them narrowly lose 19-17 to Lincolnshire and the first fixture of 2019, an away game against Lancashire became their second successive defeat.
There were mixed results from Saturday’s ‘B’ team games as the ladies went one down when Anne-Marie Millership won 3-2 against Chloe McKivett after McKivett had taken the game to a decider with a 21 darts leg and a 119 outshot in the fourth. However the home teams win was quickly erased as Wendy Adams (Warwickshire) was in fine form against Marie Fitton as she brushed aside the challenge of Fitton beating her 3-0 and taking the match award for her 19.27 average.
For the first time in the game the away side took the lead in the third when Angela Jones beat Sharon Seed 3-1 after Seed had won the opening leg only to see parity restored in the fourth game with a 3-1 win for Lancashire’s Audrey Underwood at the expense of Marion Conway and with a further 3-1 win for Danni-Lea Platt over Denice Keyte Warwickshire required a win in the final game to salvage a draw. And a draw was how the match ended as Kat Spanswick beat Ged Fielding 3-1 to make honours shared at three each.
Lancashire were quickest off the mark in the men’s ‘B’ match as Dave Adshead put them one up with his 4-2 win over Jack Wareing and doubling their lead was Gary Davey who won 4-0 against Karl Reynolds.
It took a man of the match performance from Jamie Atkins to stop the rot, Jamie who was pegged back to level terms three times by James Caton went on to win the deciding leg for a close 4-3 win in 21,15,16 and 17 darts giving him a 26.92 average. Gary Jackson took the first leg off Robert Comben and then squared the game in the fourth leg but it was Comben who got the 4-2 win to level the game before Gareth Braham gave Warwickshire the lead for the first time in the fifth with his 4-2 success against Barry Kerfoot.
By the end of the first half the away side had gone from 2-0 down to lead 4-2 with David Hill closing the half with a third consecutive 4-2 win as he accounted for Tony Clarke.
The second half began and looked as though it would replicate the first as Ian Lever (Lancashire) beat James Hykin 4-0 and Michael Sexton opened up a 2-0 lead over Tom Martin, but Martin fought back and then with wins in the following four legs won the tie 4-2 and put Warwickshire in what appeared to be a comfortable 5-3 lead.
Tom McGlone looked all set to increase that lead when he went 2-0 up against Christopher O’Connor and although O’Connor won the next two legs McGlone went ahead again in the fifth only to see O’Connor win the last two legs for a 4-3 victory, and with a similar result for Terry Hey over Carl Green after Green had cancelled out his lead three times, the match was level at 5-5 with just two to play.
A 4-2 win for Sam Cromwell put the hosts within an ace of victory and with another 4-2 win for Tony Baker over Mark Carter Lancashire had pulled off a 7-5 win.
With 3-3 draws in their first three games of the season the ladies ‘A’ then lost 5-1 to Lincolnshire with Natalie Gilbert their sole winner and against Lancashire Natalie Gilbert was once again the only winner and in the process making it three consecutive lady of the match awards.
The game saw Lancashire ladies ‘A’ begin a run of four wins with Tracey Cunningham winning a close affair with Caroline Pike 3-2 and then add two straight 3-0 wins from Ally Smith and Jo Clements against respective opponents Sue Gulliver and Melanie Jones before Sue Cusick chalked up the all-important match winning fourth game when she won 4-1 against Nina Bolt after Nina had won the first leg.
Warwickshire’s one and only win came in the fifth when Natalie Gilbert came from one down against Sue Corry to go on and win 3-1 with a super 21.53 average.
The final score was taken to 5-1 to the home team when Amy Eden beat Donna Pinch 3-1, Donna having won the opening leg.
With only the men’s ‘A’ team result to be added the overall score stood at 15-9 to Lancashire and it required a huge 10-2 win from the men to bring a win back home.
The game got off to a good start with Steve Giddings (Warwickshire) involved in a nip and tuck game with Mick Oversby as Giddings went 2-0 up and then Oversby took a 3-2 lead. A thirteen darts leg from Giddings forced a deciding leg which he won in 21 darts for a 4-3 victory. Charlie Symons made it 2-0 to Warwickshire when he beat Dave Evans 4-2. Despite the promising start the lead didn’t last long as Lancashire’s Martin Atkins beat Jamie Hughes 4-2, Wez Newton won 4-1 against Tom Aldridge and Simon Preston beat Antony Allen 4-2 to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.
The first half-finished in style for the visitors as Ian McFarlane after losing the first two legs to Carl Sneyd in eighteen darts bounced back and romped to a 4-2 win with winning legs of 12,15,16 and 17 darts for a superb man of the match award winning average of 30.52.
Nigel Heydon was once again in fine form although being pegged back to level terms no fewer than three times by Dave Airey he went on to win 4-3 with a 28.72 average and winning legs of 16,14,19 and 18 darts to restore Warwickshire’s lead.
Kevin Dowling opened up leads of 2-0 and 3-1 against Matt Clark and although then taken to a final seventh leg won it in 17 darts for a 4-3 win to take the away teams advantage to 5-3. Ted Evetts made it 6-3 when he accounted for Andrew Johnson with a 4-1 scoreline and Ian Shaw looked to be on the way to chalking up the winning seventh game when he went two up against Bradley Brooks only to see Brooks move up a gear and take the game 4-2. Despite the setback the winning game was put up in the penultimate encounter when Noel Grant handed out a 4-2 defeat to Kev Garcia and with a final 4-1 win for Lancashire’s Lee Shewan over Dean Stewart the result was a 7-5 for Warwickshire.
The combined score for the weekend was a 20-16 win for Lancashire which leaves them three points behind leaders Yorkshire and leaves Warwickshire in fourth place on 100 points eight behind third placed Glamorgan and 32 short of Yorkshire.

Somerset v Derbyshire After completing four fixtures in division three of the BDO Inter County Championships Derbyshire were on a high with a draw in their opening game against Merseyside followed by wins over Norfolk, Northumberland and Montgomery and Radnor, however their away game against Somerset was always going to be a real tester as their hosts were riding high at the top of the division’s promotional table. The first game of the ladies ‘B’ saw Derbyshire gain the early lead as Rachel Ayres beat Hollie Whiteman in straight legs 3-0 and at the same time clinch her first lady of the match award for the season with a very creditable 20.04 average. The lead was quickly cancelled out by Somerset’s Vicky Pickford who with a similar 3-0 scoreline defeated Kat McAleney to take Somerset’s match award. The home side took the lead for the first time in game three when Kara Gunter won 3-1 against Terri Bellamy only to see the score levelled once again in the fourth with a 3-2 win from Jennifer McCormick over Barbara Dyke in what was a rollercoaster of a game as Dyke took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but was pegged back each time by McCormick who went on to win the deciding leg. Emily Jones (Derbyshire) cancelled out Natalie Wadham’s lead twice before eventually going down 3-2 and with a 3-0 win over Dee Fenn in the final game by Kay Bisset the 4-2 result went to Somerset. With three wins and a draw already under their belt Derbyshire’s men’s ‘B’ team went into the game undefeated but they didn’t have the best of starts as Mat Prosser (Somerset) beat Scott McCabe 3-2 after McCabe had gone 1-0 and 2-1 up and Lee Burnham took the score along to 2-0 with his 3-1 win over Steve Thompson despite Thompson having gone one up. Gary Fenn was Derbyshire’s first winner when in the third game he beat Marcus Knapman 3-2, Knapman having levelled the game in the second and fourth legs before Fenn wrapped up not only his 3-2 win in the final leg but also the man of the match award for his 25.10 average. Benjamin Holmes squared the game in the fourth when he came from 1-0 and 2-1 down to Russell Lippett and went on to win 3-2. The home team went ahead again in the fifth when Mark Stock beat Keith Cooper 3-1 and with Chris Hartrey coming back from 2-0 down to Andrew Gillott and going on to win 3-2 Somerset’s two games buffer was restored once again as at the halfway stage they held a 4-2 advantage. Dean Lewer (Somerset) had outshots of 127 and 116 against Robert Hawker but it was not enough to avoid a 3-2 defeat as Hawker won the first game of the second half. Marc Ellis looked set to square the game for a second time when he opened up a 2-0 lead over Adam McNally but he then lost the following two legs and with missed doubles in the deciding leg went down 3-2. The hosts guaranteed a share of the points in the ninth when Rob Lovell won 3-1 against James Parkin and with a 3-2 win from Darren Newton against Timothy Rippon in the tenth they were home and dry as they held an unassailable 7-3 lead. Martyn Loaring added his 3-1 win over Henry Coates to Somerset’s account and with a 3-0 win for Jody Matthews against David Fritchley in the last game of the day the home team won the game 9-3. Dawn Buckley (Derbyshire) got the ladies ‘A’ game underway and began with a win in the opening leg but then struggled on finishing doubles and her opponent Kate Hulme claimed the 3-1 win. The lead for Somerset was however short lived as Sammi Marshall beat Karen Littler 3-1. Forging ahead in the third Somerset’s Tracey Stiling won her tie with Louise Rawson with yet another 3-1 margin and then making it four consecutive 3-1 results was Becky Taylor whose win over Carol Western took the home side’s lead to 3-1. Sally Dart was well on her way to chalking up Somerset’s winning fourth game when she went 2-0 up against Jackie Sweet but the Derbyshire player had other ideas on that score and with wins in the final two legs reduced her teams deficit to 3-2 with a 3-2 victory. Anchor player for Derbyshire was Rebecca Hoyland and for Somerset Donna Gullock. Hoyland stormed to a 2-0 lead and although she lost the third she won the fourth for a 3-1 win and put the final score at 3-3, plus Rebecca also took her team’s match award for her 20.27 average. The first five games of the men’s ‘A’ match saw all of the results go against the first throw advantage and in the opening four all of the results were 4-1. Leigh Taylor put Somerset one up with his 4-1 win over Andrew Houghton only to see Sean Lambert cancelling the win out with his 4-1 success against Russell Joyner. The home team’s lead was restored in the third when Justin Hood beat Steven Soar and again wiped out in the very next game thanks to a Michael Ryall win over Dean Baker. For a third time the hosts went ahead this time through a very close 4-3 win from Mervyn Adams over an unlucky Tim Daniels who had gone 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 up. It was game number six when the sequence was broken and it was the home side that were responsible for it as their Tony Shook won 4-1 against David Fritchley to give Somerset a 4-2 lead at the midway point. That lead looked as though it would be extended when Neil Raikes began the second half by opening up a 3-0 lead over Paul Williams but Williams fought back magnificently to win the last four legs for a 4-3 win. Levelling the game at four each was Gary Fenn who had an unbelievable weekend as after he had won the man of the match award for the ‘B’ team the previous day he then took the ‘A’ team’s award with a 4-2 win over Steve Hoddinott in which he recorded winning legs of 19,17,19 and 16 darts giving him a 27.25 average. Game number nine saw Somerset take the lead for a fourth time as Leon Taylor won 4-2 against Connor Hodgkinson who after winning the first leg his only other success was in the fourth. Taking the hosts within an ace of victory was Mark Stock who won 4-0 against Robert Needham. However Somerset were made to wait for their win as Lee Stanley handed out a similar 4-0 whitewash to his opponent Adam McNally and at the same time keep hopes alive for Derbyshire of a draw. Adi Acott (Somerset) won the first leg of the final game against Ian Allcock and although Allcock drew level with a 17 darts leg he was unable to capitalise on it and finished on the wrong side of a 4-1 scoreline to see Somerset win the game 7-5 and also record an overall win of 23-13 for the weekend. The defeat leaves Derbyshire fourth in the table on 105 points their opponents topping the table on 119 but closely followed by second placed Cleveland with 115 points and in third place is Merseyside who are just one point to the good on Derbyshire. Bedfordshire v Shropshire After a bright start to the season with one draw and one win in the opening two games in division four of the BDO Inter County Championships Shropshire have since lost two games in a row and their fifth game of the season away to high riding Bedfordshire was never going to be an easy task. The ladies ‘B’ team could not have wished for a better start but it turned out to be a game of two halves as Cally Jones opened up for Shropshire with a 3-2 win over Joanna Coombes after the Bedfordshire player had gone 1-0 and 2-1 up. Sophie Fawcett (Shropshire) like her team mate Jones also lost the first leg in her game with Lisa Perkins but then took a 2-1 lead and although Perkins won the fourth Sophie Fawcett won the decider for a 3-2 win and the match award for her 14.84 average. The score then moved along to 3-0 to visiting Shropshire as Debbie Davies added her 3-1 win over Jennifer Thomas to their tally. But then it was all change as Rachael Mooney (Shropshire) won the first leg against Angie Moyce and lost 3-2, Cheryl Owen went down 3-1 to Jo Dilley and Caroline Powell despite levelling at 2-2 after trailing 2-0 lost 3-2 to Rachel Egleton to put the final score at 3-3. The men’s ‘B’ went into the game on the back of three consecutive defeats and as a consequence confidence running at a low and that surely showed as their hosts stormed into a crushing 9-0 lead, six of the nine games finishing with a close 3-2 result, finishing doubles playing a big part in Shropshire’s downfall. Mark Circuitt gave Bedfordshire their starter for nine as he beat Chris Hill 3-2, Gareth Murrey doubled the home teams lead with his 3-0 success against John Stanley. Paul Wright, Peter Dilley and Bobby Lee were all 3-2 winners in turn against Lee Hodgkiss, Darren Lane and Chris Fox. Paul Smith beat Neville Quinton 3-0 and taking the score to a game winning 7-0 was Brain Reed with his 3-1 win over Chris Williams. Joe Reid and Paul Meakin were two more 3-2 winners as they accounted for their respective opponents James Mansell and Andy Gilbert before in the tenth game Shropshire recorded their first winner. That winner came in the shape of Mike Hampson who after winning the first leg went 2-1 down then went on to win 3-2 against Bob Bennett. After such a long wait for a winner Shropshire then added a second as Richard Parker kicked off his game against Luke Ely with outshots of 116 and 117 to open a 2-0 lead, both legs in eighteen darts. Ely won the following two legs to take the game to a deciding leg which Parker won in 17 darts for not only a 3-2 win but at the same time he also took the man of the match award for his 27.29 average. The final game of the day went to Phillip Price (Bedfordshire) who was pegged back to level terms twice by Simon Pritchard who if he hadn’t missed doubles in the first leg could have won the tie 3-2 instead of losing it 3-2. The overall result a whopping 10-2 win to Bedfordshire. With two wins and two draws Shropshire ladies ‘A’ were undefeated in their first four games of the season but that was all about to change. Winner of the previous three match awards Stephanie Clarke opened up for Shropshire and although her opponent Holly Meadweel took her to a deciding leg it was Stephanie who won it, her 3-2 win with an 18.36 average making it four successive awards. Shirley Williams was quick to level for Bedfordshire as she won 3-1 against Sue Lane and then with three 3-0 wins in a row for Kerry King, Hannah Meadwell and Maria Perrin against their respective opponents Michele Pritchard, Julie Griffiths and Allison Gallagher Bedfordshire were home and dry with a 4-1 advantage. The final score was taken to 4-2 when Marie Riggs made it an especially fantastic Birthday when she came from one down against Donna Hutt to go on and win 3-1. The men’s ‘A’ needed a 12-0 clean sweep for an overall weekend win and although they began fine with a 4-0 win from Reece Cook-Lucas over Patrick Clowery followed by a 4-2 win for Andy Jervis against Aden O’Mahoney the pipe dream was ended in the third as Chris Dilley (Bedfordshire) beat Pete Eley 4-1. A further 4-1 win for Ben Hazel against Dan Astbury levelled the score at 2-2 before the visiting team took the next three games. Rob Henderson won 4-3 against Adam King, Sam Hamilton handed out a 4-1 defeat to Mark Elliott and taking Shropshire’s lead to 5-2 was Clive Lucking who had a 4-3 win against Wayne Chandley. Richard Wood put a stop to the Shropshire charge as he beat Justin Evans 4-3 and reducing the arrears to 5-4 was Trevor Ellacott who had a 4-2 success in his tie with Martin Price. Keith Allman restored Shropshire’s winning ways when he handed Lloyd Wintle a 4-0 whitewash and with a 4-3 win from Richard Parker over Dara Curran Shropshire’s men’s ‘A’ team had won their first game in the five match season so far as they were now 7-4 up. With the match now won anchor man Derek Coulson, already a winner of two man of the match awards made it three when he came from 3-0 down to battle on and win 4-3 against Micky Reed with a 26.09 average. Coulson’s win took the final score to 8-4 for Shropshire and gave an overall weekend result of 21-15 to Bedfordshire. Hoyland stormed to a 2-0 lead and although she lost the third she won the fourth for a 3-1 win and put the final score at 3-3, plus Rebecca also took her team’s match award for her 20.27 average. The first five games of the men’s ‘A’ match saw all of the results go against the first throw advantage and in the opening four all of the results were 4-1. Leigh Taylor put Somerset one up with his 4-1 win over Andrew Houghton only to see Sean Lambert cancelling the win out with his 4-1 success against Russell Joyner. The home team’s lead was restored in the third when Justin Hood beat Steven Soar and again wiped out in the very next game thanks to a Michael Ryall win over Dean Baker. For a third time the hosts went ahead this time through a very close 4-3 win from Mervyn Adams over an unlucky Tim Daniels who had gone 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 up. It was game number six when the sequence was broken and it was the home side that were responsible for it as their Tony Shook won 4-1 against David Fritchley to give Somerset a 4-2 lead at the midway point. That lead looked as though it would be extended when Neil Raikes began the second half by opening up a 3-0 lead over Paul Williams but Williams fought back magnificently to win the last four legs for a 4-3 win. Levelling the game at four each was Gary Fenn who had an unbelievable weekend as after he had won the man of the match award for the ‘B’ team the previous day he then took the ‘A’ team’s award with a 4-2 win over Steve Hoddinott in which he recorded winning legs of 19,17,19 and 16 darts giving him a 27.25 average. Game number nine saw Somerset take the lead for a fourth time as Leon Taylor won 4-2 against Connor Hodgkinson who after winning the first leg his only other success was in the fourth. Taking the hosts within an ace of victory was Mark Stock who won 4-0 against Robert Needham. However Somerset were made to wait for their win as Lee Stanley handed out a similar 4-0 whitewash to his opponent Adam McNally and at the same time keep hopes alive for Derbyshire of a draw. Adi Acott (Somerset) won the first leg of the final game against Ian Allcock and although Allcock drew level with a 17 darts leg he was unable to capitalise on it and finished on the wrong side of a 4-1 scoreline to see Somerset win the game 7-5 and also record an overall win of 23-13 for the weekend. The defeat leaves Derbyshire fourth in the table on 105 points their opponents topping the table on 119 but closely followed by second placed Cleveland with 115 points and in third place is Merseyside who are just one point to the good on Derbyshire. Bedfordshire v Shropshire After a bright start to the season with one draw and one win in the opening two games in division four of the BDO Inter County Championships Shropshire have since lost two games in a row and their fifth game of the season away to high riding Bedfordshire was never going to be an easy task. The ladies ‘B’ team could not have wished for a better start but it turned out to be a game of two halves as Cally Jones opened up for Shropshire with a 3-2 win over Joanna Coombes after the Bedfordshire player had gone 1-0 and 2-1 up. Sophie Fawcett (Shropshire) like her team mate Jones also lost the first leg in her game with Lisa Perkins but then took a 2-1 lead and although Perkins won the fourth Sophie Fawcett won the decider for a 3-2 win and the match award for her 14.84 average. The score then moved along to 3-0 to visiting Shropshire as Debbie Davies added her 3-1 win over Jennifer Thomas to their tally. But then it was all change as Rachael Mooney (Shropshire) won the first leg against Angie Moyce and lost 3-2, Cheryl Owen went down 3-1 to Jo Dilley and Caroline Powell despite levelling at 2-2 after trailing 2-0 lost 3-2 to Rachel Egleton to put the final score at 3-3. The men’s ‘B’ went into the game on the back of three consecutive defeats and as a consequence confidence running at a low and that surely showed as their hosts stormed into a crushing 9-0 lead, six of the nine games finishing with a close 3-2 result, finishing doubles playing a big part in Shropshire’s downfall. Mark Circuitt gave Bedfordshire their starter for nine as he beat Chris Hill 3-2, Gareth Murrey doubled the home teams lead with his 3-0 success against John Stanley. Paul Wright, Peter Dilley and Bobby Lee were all 3-2 winners in turn against Lee Hodgkiss, Darren Lane and Chris Fox. Paul Smith beat Neville Quinton 3-0 and taking the score to a game winning 7-0 was Brain Reed with his 3-1 win over Chris Williams. Joe Reid and Paul Meakin were two more 3-2 winners as they accounted for their respective opponents James Mansell and Andy Gilbert before in the tenth game Shropshire recorded their first winner. That winner came in the shape of Mike Hampson who after winning the first leg went 2-1 down then went on to win 3-2 against Bob Bennett. After such a long wait for a winner Shropshire then added a second as Richard Parker kicked off his game against Luke Ely with outshots of 116 and 117 to open a 2-0 lead, both legs in eighteen darts. Ely won the following two legs to take the game to a deciding leg which Parker won in 17 darts for not only a 3-2 win but at the same time he also took the man of the match award for his 27.29 average. The final game of the day went to Phillip Price (Bedfordshire) who was pegged back to level terms twice by Simon Pritchard who if he hadn’t missed doubles in the first leg could have won the tie 3-2 instead of losing it 3-2. The overall result a whopping 10-2 win to Bedfordshire. With two wins and two draws Shropshire ladies ‘A’ were undefeated in their first four games of the season but that was all about to change. Winner of the previous three match awards Stephanie Clarke opened up for Shropshire and although her opponent Holly Meadweel took her to a deciding leg it was Stephanie who won it, her 3-2 win with an 18.36 average making it four successive awards. Shirley Williams was quick to level for Bedfordshire as she won 3-1 against Sue Lane and then with three 3-0 wins in a row for Kerry King, Hannah Meadwell and Maria Perrin against their respective opponents Michele Pritchard, Julie Griffiths and Allison Gallagher Bedfordshire were home and dry with a 4-1 advantage. The final score was taken to 4-2 when Marie Riggs made it an especially fantastic Birthday when she came from one down against Donna Hutt to go on and win 3-1. The men’s ‘A’ needed a 12-0 clean sweep for an overall weekend win and although they began fine with a 4-0 win from Reece Cook-Lucas over Patrick Clowery followed by a 4-2 win for Andy Jervis against Aden O’Mahoney the pipe dream was ended in the third as Chris Dilley (Bedfordshire) beat Pete Eley 4-1. A further 4-1 win for Ben Hazel against Dan Astbury levelled the score at 2-2 before the visiting team took the next three games. Rob Henderson won 4-3 against Adam King, Sam Hamilton handed out a 4-1 defeat to Mark Elliott and taking Shropshire’s lead to 5-2 was Clive Lucking who had a 4-3 win against Wayne Chandley. Richard Wood put a stop to the Shropshire charge as he beat Justin Evans 4-3 and reducing the arrears to 5-4 was Trevor Ellacott who had a 4-2 success in his tie with Martin Price. Keith Allman restored Shropshire’s winning ways when he handed Lloyd Wintle a 4-0 whitewash and with a 4-3 win from Richard Parker over Dara Curran Shropshire’s men’s ‘A’ team had won their first game in the five match season so far as they were now 7-4 up. With the match now won anchor man Derek Coulson, already a winner of two man of the match awards made it three when he came from 3-0 down to battle on and win 4-3 against Micky Reed with a 26.09 average. Coulson’s win took the final score to 8-4 for Shropshire and gave an overall weekend result of 21-15 to Bedfordshire.
