To round off the Irish Centre Four a Side Ladies League season the singles and doubles competitions were played off at the Digbeth Club. Taking the singles title with a final success against Chris Scott was the effervescent Lesley Newcombe. Vicky Burn and Mo Jennings were runners up in the doubles competition with Karen Nelson and Teri Bellamy winning the title.

Selly Park, reigning champions of the Irish Centre Four a Side Ladies League, got the new campaign off to a good start by beating last season’s runners up, Northfield, 11-10. Joyce Webster with 4x100 and 105 was Northfields top player, but the star of the show must surely be Lesley Newcombe (Selly Park), who hit an amazing TEN scores of 100 plus 121.

Both of the other fixtures also finished 11-10, Sheldon and Ward End defeating, in turn Handsworth and Perry Barr.

With Red Arrows still unbeaten in the Forest of Arden Winter League, the race is on for the runners up spot and in the latest round of fixtures two of the contenders, Silver Wings and Hobs Meadow squared up to each other. Playing at home Silver Wing stormed to a 4-2 lead. However, Hobs fought back bravely to snatch a 5-4 victory. Another team pressing for the second place is the Harvester who had a convincing 7-2 home win over Heart of England.

This week’s results in the Acocks Green Winter League produced something of a shock when third placed Journeys End, despite maximums from Chris Deegan and Karl Bunce, lost by a massive 8-1 at home to Red Rooster who are currently fourth. Top of the table Shirley Legion had a comfortable 6-3 win at the Plume of Feathers. Tyseley Staff narrowly lost 5-4 at home to Britannia Arrows while Moonraker went down 6-3 as hosts to Robin Hood.

The Sheldon and District Summer League will be holding their AGM on Sunday 28 March at the Lea Hall RBL commencing at 10-30am. All teams, old and new are invited to attend the meeting to form the forthcoming season which is envisaged to begin in May. Anyone requiring any further information should contact either Alan Blythe on 0121-748-7548 or Jim Tough on 0121-707-5422.

With only three fixtures remaining in the Warwickshire Mens Super League, Coventry Howitzers look almost certainties to carry off the winner’s silverware. A 5-3 home win over Rugby gives them a total of 144 points, fifteen more than their nearest rivals Bedworth Banks who could only manage a 4-4 draw in their game at Birmingham Old Wharf. Birmingham Midland Red reduced the gap on Old Wharf to just one point as a result of their 7-1 success against Minworth.

----------------------------------

Tipton, leaders of the West Midlands Mens Super League, got off to a good start in their home game with Burntwood going 4-0 up through Dave Robbins, Martin Angell, Dave Pritchard and Colin Davies. However, in the last five games Burntwood took three thanks to Steve Brindley, Cliff Biggs and Colin Murphy to make the final score a more respectable 6-3. Tipton with 58 points are twelve clear of second placed Wednesfield but have played one game more.
