A LOOK BACK IN TIME - 26.11.2003

There were mixed fortunes for our local counties Warwickshire and West Midlands in the BDO Inter Counties Championships. Warwickshire, playing at home at the Canley Social Club, Coventry took on fellow premier division rivals Essex and chalked up a 20-16 win, the second successive victory. Both of the ladies teams recorded 4-2 wins, with Trina Gulliver (28.36) and Betty Sinnett (19.49) taking the respective ’A’ and ’B’ match awards. The ‘A’ side’s win kept their 100% record intact.

The men’s ’B’ side finished on the wrong side of an 8-4 result, Tony Brown taking their man of the match award with his 29.01, while the ’A’ team reversed that scoreline to win 8-4 to maintain their unbeaten run so far this season. Scott Mitton was the ’A’ teams top man with a very creditable 31.19 average.

West Midlands travelled to take on Nottinghamshire and returned with a close 19-17 defeat. Teresa Johnson (19.03) was the ’B’ side’s top lady for the third time in as many games and Angie Perry (16.58) took the ’A’ teams award, but unfortunately both of them saw their teams go down 4-2.

There was a 7-5 win for the men’s ’B’, making it two in a row, while in Sunday’s game, after trailing 6-4, the ’A’ team forced a draw thanks to closing wins from Chris Hickman and Richard Foster. Hickman took the match award with a 27.94 average, Mervyn Field (28.43) took the honours for the ’B’.

Winning Post continue to impress in division one of the Longwood league. In their latest fixture they travelled to the Red Lion ’B’ and handed out a convincing 8-0 whitewash to their opponents, extending their winning run to four games, giving them maximum eight points. The Globe also had a comfortable 6-2 success against their nearest rivals the Dolphin, who prior to the match had not lost a game and were in second place. As a result of their defeat Dolphin have now dropped to third in the table and Globe have taken over the number two spot with a slightly superior average.

Queens ‘A’ stay on top of the second division following their 5-3 win over Cue Sports Club. They now have seven points, two more than Queens ’B’, their nearest rivals, who had a bye this week.

In the tie between Hillyfields and Hobsons Choice, in division one of the Harborne and District Winter league, there was a 160 break and a 180 for J.Best (Hillyfields) and a maximum for G.Dare (Hobsons Choice) Honourse as far as tons were concerned were pretty even, however, the result was an emphatic 6-1 result in favour of Hillyfields. W.C.WMC and Smethwick Labour Club also had 6-1 victories against respective opponents New Inns and the Woodcock. Raven suffered a somewhat surprising 5-2 defeat at home to the George, Midland Red winning by the same margin at Quinborne Flights.

Cock Inn were the second divisions biggest winners as they won 6-1 away to Stonehouse Flights. The other division two games finished with close 4-3 verdicts, Avenue Social beating the Old Mill and Harborne Stores accounting for the Pheasant.
