Peter Wright Q & A

Q1.When and where did you play darts for the first time? Now that’s a really good question! It was many many years ago when I was 10 years old and my Dad gave me a set of darts to play with. I was addicted instantly and have never stopped playing since. Q2.Do you / have you been playing any other sports? I did used to play football when I was younger but Darts soon became so much of my life that I never really had much time to dedicate to other sports. I have always liked to try and keep my stamina up and too be strong as I like my throw when my arms feel powerful so I lift a few weights now and again but not enough as I'd like too!! Q3.What do you consider as the most important point in your current form ? The most important part of my current form is to feel that I can move the dart around the dartboard with total comfort and accuracy. If I’m not confident in taking out high ton plus finishes then I have to go back and work really hard on that area of my game. Nearly every player on Tour can hit treble twenties all day for fun - so the finishing is the most important part of the game for me. Q4.What do you consider as the most important point (that you pay attention to) during a game? It’s very hard to define just one area as every game is different and your throw feels slightly different in every game. The area which I focus on to help me manage my game is too have a "soft" focus and natural rhythm that helps me play my best. When my game drops off it is usually as I'm distracted and not letting my usual flow happen Q5.What do you consider as the most important point (that you pay attention to) when practicing? For me it depends on how I have just played the last few competitive games. If my scoring is great and finishing poor then I will drill myself on finishing. So I try to manage my game on the areas that need too but really in the modern game you simply have to work on each of the 3 crucial areas: Scoring - x2 Darts Finishes - x3 Dart Finishes. Q6.Have you ever been in a slump as a player? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha YES!! We all play feeling we are in a slump as so often we play way below our practice standards. Q7.How did you come out of that slump? As long as I have got my approach to the game right, done the right work and looked after myself I just believe that my results will change and try not to worry about it too much - as in this game you will always throw more darts that miss than hit so you would go insane if you worried too much. Q8.Tell us about a memorable game. I have so many games that I can think of all for very different reasons - but to be honest the Semi-final in 2014 against Simon Whitlock will always stick with me as its the game that has got me nearest to my lifelong ambition of being the PDC World Champion Q9.Tell us about your current darts setup. My current darts are the 24g Mambas - These were developed with Red Dragon over about 6 months. The dart had to be the exact same length and thickness as my Euro 11's but I just wanted a totally different grip feeling. The design guys at Red Dragon are so understanding of my throw that when they showed me the Delta Grip I was blown away! I'm currently throwing with Crossfire Intermediate Shafts and have recently moved back to a standard 75 micron flight as the dart seems to get more airspeed. Q10.Tell us about your plans for the future. My plans are simple. Keep improving and keep chasing major Titles they mean everything to me. Q11.You have a different hairstyle and fashion for each game - are you choosing them yourself? My Wife Jo plays a huge part in what I wear and she does so much work in this area that all I have to do is turn up and throw the darts. She's simply amazing and such a huge part of what we do as a team - I'm very lucky to have such a supportive partner. Q12.Tell us about your favourite pastime or hobbies. I love cooking, looking after my chickens and working around my house as we live way out in the Countryside. It is so relaxing to be at home with my family as we are miles from anywhere and it helps me recover from the hectic schedule that we have. Q13.Please give your Japanese fans a message. I loved being in Japan they are so passionate about the game and so supportive of me, so I am very grateful to them for that. Keep playing and work hard at your game....but always remember to play with a smile on your face. Many thanks Peter “Snakebite” Wright
