Iceman Set to Cool Matchplay Heat
The Iceman has reached the Final of every other ranking major tournament, winning the World Championships, World Grand Prix & Grand Slam twice. Yet Gezzy has only once made the Last 8 in the Matchplay and has fallen at the first hurdle in his last four attempts.
This year the World Number One is looking to put that right and have a run in Blackpool befitting of a World Champion.
For World Champion and World Number One, Gerwyn Price, there has always been one event where he has failed to achieve the success he has at other PDC majors – the World Matchplay.
“The Matchplay is one of the PDC’s top events and its one that I am desperate to win. I’ve never done as well as I know I should’ve done, especially in recent years. But I’m going to change that this year” Gerwyn told Red Dragon ahead of the Matchplay.
“Obviously I missed the Premier League, a tournament I was really excited for, so I haven’t played a huge amount of competitive darts recently, but I’m raring to go now & show everyone what they’ve missed.”
The last time Gerwyn took to the stage for a televised event was more than four months ago in the UK Open – a long time for a World Number One to be out of action.
Of course, Gezzy has been playing on the Pro Tour in that time, winning one event & reaching two further Finals.
Going into Super Series 5 ahead of the Matchplay, Gerwyn said, “I’m aiming for a strong week, to give myself the best build up for Blackpool. I’m raring to go and if I can pick up a title or two then that is the perfect warm up.
To watch the PDC World Matchplay tune in to Sky Sports for all the action, otherwise keep up to date with all Red Dragon’s social media channels to follow Gezzy’s progress!
