A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 2000-12-20

It was not a good journey for West Midlands as they travelled south to take on Buckinghamshire in the fourth fixture of their BDO Inter counties season in division two. Saturday’s games saw the ladies lose 5-1, their fourth consecutive defeat. The sole winner for the midlands team was Janet Hubbard (14.05). The men’s ‘B’, undefeated prior to the match went down 8-4 with Ian Hartland taking the match award with a 26.59 average.

The ‘A’ games saw the experienced Rose Mycock taake the honours with a 19.12 average as her team finished on the wrong side of a 4-2 scoreline. The men’s side completed the awful quartet of defeats as they lost 7-5, Tom Aldridge (28.86) their top man.

The first round of the Skipp Cup was on the agenda for the Harborne and District Winter League. There was a shock defeat for the Stonehouse as they lost 10-5 to Avenue Social. Biggest win of the round was supplied by Harborne Stores ‘A’ who beat Highlander LAdies 13-2. The George had a close 8-7 victory over Bartley Green Social Club with a 160 break by A.Stevens. Midland Red were also 8-7 winners as they accounted for league leaders Lickey Banker.

The next delegates meeting, plus the Harborne 401 Summer League AGM will be held on the 7th January at the Stonehouse, Stonehouse Lane, Quinton, at 11-00am. All old and new teams are invited to attend.

Pat Koyce continues to dominate the Bass Brewries sponsored Minworth Social Individual League. 2-1 wins against Steve Davis and Rob South have given Koyce a total of 86 points. Pat is a massive fourteen points ahead of his nearest rivals, Ian Humphries, Steve Dwyer, Trevor Frost, Dave Shorthouse and Barry Stephens all on 72 points and all with at least one match in hand of the leader.

Hitting 180 this week are Derek Mountjoy, Alan Mayell, Dave Shorthouse, Brian Brooks and Steve Dwyer, who hit two. Koyce and Dwyer both recorded 13 darts legs.

The Sheldon Heath Social Club was the setting for the Forest of Arden Winter League’s men’s and women’s singles knockouts.

The quarter finals of the men’s event saw Mick Gorste (Hobs Meadow) take out team mate Gareth Bruce and Red Arrows man Craig Hall defeta another Arrows player, Alan Price. In the semi’s Gorste beat Hall and Mick McCormack (Mackadown Social) win against Barry Salter (Stechford Social). In the final Gorste took the title with a straight 2-0 win.

Strangely the ladies final was a repeat of last season’s final, where Jeanette Mulholland (Red Arrows) won 2-1 against Stechford Social’s Jeanette James. Losing semi-finalists were Ruth Gwillam (Cocks and Hens) and Claire Barber (Hobs Meadow).

Midland Red could only manage a close 5-4 win over lowly Old Oscott WMC, in division one of the Four Oaks and District Winter League. Nevertheless it was enough to keep the Reds in pole position. Three teams, all with 14 points share the number spot in division two, Mile Oak, who beat Bolmere Mixed 5-4, Good Hope, who had a 6-3 success against S.S.Mary and Johns Flights and Safe Harbour, they won 5-4 against S.S.Mary and Johns,
