A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 1999-11-10

A 160 break and a seven darts leg from T.McGlone helped Midland Red, reigning Harborne and District Winter League premier division champions to a close 5-4 verdict against the George whose D.Johnson also broke with 160. In division two Hillyfields ‘A’ proved too strong for Bartley Green Social Flights as they stormed to an 8-1 win. Bugle Horn, after trailing 4-2 at the Quinborne fought back to snatch a 5-4 victory.

Highlander maintain their unbeaten record in division three, but only just as they scraped through 5-4 at Avenue Social. Raven ladies broke their duck with a 6-3 win at the expense of the Highlander ladies.

The Acocks Green Winter league are on the lookout for another team to join them for the forthcoming season, which should start in mid November. Anyone interested in entering a team, or requiring further information, should contact Graham Washburn on 0121-430-4013.

Last week’s results in the Forset of Arden Winter League all finished with 5-4 scorelines, so did this week’s. Surprise of the week was the defeat of reigning champions Red Arrows. Arrows playing at home against another unbeaten team, Stechford Social, went down to a last gasp win from Social’s B.Salter. Salter won his match with B.Twist 2-0, in the second leg he recorded the league’s highest start so far 156. Other winners were Cocks and Hens, Harvester and Silver Wings.

In the Irish Centre Four a Side Ladies League leaders Selly Park march on. A 16-5 win against bottom team Sutton puts them on 99 points, 23 more than their nearest rivals Acocks Green who beat Northfield 12-9, despite a 180 from Northfields Vicky Edwards.

The Digbeth Irish Centre was also the setting for the Billy Donnelly Memorial Trophy. The event, in memory of Bill who at the age of 57 died earlier this year from a heart attack. The competition, which is going to be run annually, raised £60, which will be donated to the Heart Foundation.

Round One of the Punchbowl was on the agenda for the Sheldon and District Winter League. Best individual performances came from R.Ratcliffe (Lyndon Arrows) 160 break, B.Biggs (Chelmsley Con Club) 9 darts game, F.Goldbey (Malt Shovel) 160 break and 10 darts game and J.Pears (Saltley Amateur Gardeners) 9 darts game. Winning through to the next round were Stechford Social, Sheldon Heath Dukes, Mackadown Social, Shard End Social Flights, Shard End Social, Olton RBL, Malt Shovel, Banbury Club, St Annes, Iron Horse, Saltley Amateur Gardeners, Bitish Telecom Club, Lea Hall RBL and Gables Tavern.

After only four week’s of the Bass Breweries and Bristan Ltd sponsored Minworth Double Top League only one player, A.Grainger remains with a 100% record. Grainger with nine wins in as many games as opened up a clear lead from the chasing pack, T.Ryland, 7 wins from 9 games, T.Pedley and A.Mayell, 7 wins from 8 games and C.Farrington who has 6 wins from 7 games.

Bedworth Bank’s are fast becoming the draw specialists in the Warwickshire Men’s Super League. In their last four fixtures they have finished all square at four each, the latest being against the league’s early pacesetters Birmingham Vauxhall. In all Bedworth have now drawn five of the seven games they have played. Coventry Howitzers, Birmingham Midland Red and Kettlebrook Tamworth all had 5-3 wins against respective opponents Rugby, Coventry Potters Green and Kingstanding. The week’s biggest winners were Tamworth who won 8-0 at Warwick Town.

Every Sunday evening, with the exception of county weekend’s, the Trades Hall Club, Tatbank Road, Oldbury stage an open knockout. For an entry fee of £2 there is prize money of £100 on offer. Players can enter on the night, deadline for entries is 8-00pm.
