A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 1999-07-21

In division one of the Harborne 401 Summer League leaders Bell Inn returned from their visit to the Brook with a crushing 9-0 victory. Helping Bell on their way were R.Kinsella who had a 136 break plus 5x100 and V.Gould with a 120 break, 3x100 and a 100 game shot. K.Pemberton (Hobsons Choice) recorded a 160 break. However his team lost 8-1 to second placed Bartley Green Social Club. Red Lion had a cracking 5-4 win in a close fought encounter with Stonehouse Stars.

Greenlands continued to press for honours in division two beating Village Stump 7-2 to maintain their unbeaten run. W.Godwin notched a maximum for Travellers Rest as they defeated Stonehouse 5-4 in another close affair.

Bugle Horn head division three and they did their hopes of promotion no harm at all with their 7-2 win at home to Bear and Staff, T.Cahill chalking up a 160 break. Peter Oarry scored a maximum as his team, Harborne Stores slumped to an 8-1 defeat at the Beeches, the same scoreline by which Raven Ladies beat Stonehouse Ladies.


In the final of the Skipp Cup in the Harborne and District Winter League, both finalists, Raven and Midland Red, were well below their usual standard. However the all important 9-6 result went in favour of Midland Red.

Londonderry were the winners of the Skipp Consolation Cup. They lifted the trophy with an 11-4 success over Beeches.


In the group three match between Kinghurst LC and Harvester in the Sheldon and District Summer League there were no fewer than three maimums scored. R.Evans (Kinghurst) notched one for the home side while P.Vasey and K.Gilbert both found the three treble twenties for the visitors who also won the match 5-3. Malt Shovel were the division’s biggest winners, beating Heathway 7-1. S.O’Brian hitting a maxi for the Shovel.

Two 180’s were hit in group one and both came from Smiths Wood players, namely A.McCrar and T.Whitehouse who helped their team on to a 5-3 win at the Three Horseshoes.

A reminder to all teams that the first round matches for the Remembrance / Poppy Appeal Trophy should be played by Sunday 25th July.


The Sheldon and District Winter League still have a few vacancies for their forthcoming season which will commence on Thursday 2nd September. C.Hall and B.Allen were both on the mark with 180’s for the Red Arrows in division ‘A’ of the Forest of Arden Summer League as their team won 6-4 at Hobs Meadow. There was even less joy for Hobs Meadow Mixes as they finished on the wrong side of a shattering 10-0 defeat at the hands of the Silver Wings.

In the first round of the league’s Knockout Cup there were wins for Mackadown Sports and Social, Red Arrows, Hobs Meadow, Silver Wings and Heart of England ‘A’. The draw for the second round is, Cock and Hens v Mackadown Sports and Social, Silver Wings v Stechford Social, Red Arrows v Hobs Meadow, Heart of England ‘B’ v Heart of England ‘A’.

There was sadness for the league recently with the news of the death of Margaret Murray. Margaret a player for a number of years was of late playing for Fordbridge Social. Following a previous illness Margaret appeared to be on the mend but then suffered a fatal heart attack. She will be sadly missed not only by the league but by all who knew her.


A 15-6 win against Perry Barr has lifted Handsworth into second place in the Irish Centre Four a Side Ladies League. Noreen Harris was in top form for the winners hitting 4x100,121,123 and a superb 180. despite beating Sheldon !2-9 Northfield have dropped to third place with 136 points, two less than Handsworth. Selly Park, way out in front with 163 points did not have a fixture due to Ward End dropping out of the league.


Congratulations to Joyce Webster who has successfully defended her Birmingham Ladies Double Top League title. In the latest round of games Joyce chalked up 3-0 wins over Jean Cotton and Marion Walker to guarantee her the championship with two to play. Angie Bourne and Vicky Edwards kept up their chase for the runners up spot, Angie winning 2-1 and 3-0 against Pat Bradshaw and Jean Cotton respectively while Vicky beat Mo Doherty 2-1 then Phyliss Larden 3-0.
