A Look Back In Time 16.01.2008

Division one of the Sheldon and District Winter League can only have what can be described as a Christmas hangover as leaders of the division Pavilions lost their first game of 2008. Playing away, Pavilions squared up to bottom of the table Small Heath Amateur Gardeners, who prior to the encounter had played nine games without a win, so a win for the leaders looked definitely on the cards, but it was not to be as the hosts chalked up an amazing 7-2 victory. Despite their loss Pavilions hang on to pole position, however, they have now been joined on the same 14 points by RAFA, Hobs Meadow and Lea Hall Nomads, with Hobs Meadow having played one fixture fewer than their rivals.

In division one Saltley Amateur Gardeners have taken over the number one spot following their 7-2 win against Mackadown Social, former leaders Olton had a bye this week and drop down to second place level on points with Saltley. Shard End RBL ‘B’ are on the same 18 points as the top two teams after a 6-3 win at Castle Vale Residents Association.

Hot shots this week were T.Whitehouse (Shard End RBL ‘B’), T.Randell, A.Caddick (Saltley Amateur Gardeners) and B.Salter (Stechford Social) who all notched a 180, A.McCrave (Mackadown Social) and P.Hill (Yardley Ex Colts) both recorded a 160 break.

The Brook Meadow Individual Double Top League got their new season underway this week and early pacesetters are Gordon Clinton and Jason Evans who both got 10 points from their opening two fixtures. Clinton kicked off with a 3-0 win over Dean McCauley and followed that with another straight legs win against John Masefield, Evans meanwhile had similar 3-0 wins in his games against John Masefield and Jake Smith. In his game with Smith Evans hit two maximums. Other players to hit the three treble twenties in the opening fixtures were Gordon Clinton, Ross Macken, Trevor Frost and Mathew Gallett.

Reigning champion Trevor Frost had a winning start in his defence of the title beating newcomer Tony Commerford 2-1 and then Scott Austin 3-0.

The Pip Club League rounded off their season when division teams Globe Inn and Dolphin played off their outstanding fixture. The result was a convincing 7-1 win for Dolphin to give them the runners up spot, two points behind champions Glascote Club. Queens Head finished with the same 18 points as Dolphin but lost out on the second place by having just one leg fewer than Dolphin.

Tomorrow night the league will be playing off the quarter finals of their division one Challenge Cup, the draw for which is, Dolphin v Queens Head, Three Horse Shoes v Two Gates Club, Red Lion ’A’ v Globe Inn, GlascoteClub v Tamworth Snooker Centre.

The league will be holding their next league meeting at the Pip Club this coming Sunday commencing at 11-0am.

The Small Heath League will be staging their presentation night at the Emerald Club this coming Friday.
