World Masters

Former world champion Martin Adams edged out Scott Waites 7-6 to win the Winmau World Masters in Bridlington and a cheque for £25,000.

There was never more than a set between the players and it needed two extra legs in the final set to separate them, Cambridgeshire ace Adams hitting double 16 after missing three earlier throws at winning doubles.

The first two sets went with the darts before Waites broke in the third to go ahead with the help of a 127 checkout.

But Adams, 52, leveled with a break of his own in the next and the match turned into a ding-dong contest right the way to the decisive 13th set.

Both men had plenty of chances to forge an advantage in what was turning into a thrilling final.

But it was the man known as ^Wolfie^ who made amends for his final defeat in 2006 in the event to Michael van Gerwen, and he also had the bonus of an extra £1,000 for the highest checkout - a 160 on his way to winning the seventh set.

Earlier, Adams beat Tony O^Shea in the semi-finals, while Waites saw off Robert Wagner. Source: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12288_4606210,00.html
