A West Midlands Round Up By Alan Towe

Warwickshire County Darts Organisation will go into their final fixture of the year in the premier division of the BDO Inter County Championships this coming weekend on the back of two successive wins. Following wins over West Midlands and Cheshire the home team will be looking to make it three in a row when they play hosts to Lincolnshire who are some three places and eighteen points behind them. A win could well see Warwickshire move up into the top three places in the table.

The Four Oaks and District Winter League played the first round of their Brian Goodman and Ken Rust cups, in the former Boldmere St Mikes overwhelmed Oscott Arrows with a convincing 9-0 scoreline while The Boot who are newly promoted to division one took the final three games to win 6-3 against The Digby. The Oscott Social and Old Oscott Arrows were involved in a very close encounter Arrows taking the match in the final leg of final game for a 5-4 victory.

In the Ken Rust Cup The Towers played host to Sutton Sports and Social Club, they lost the first three games but levelled the match at three all and although they lost the seventh game they won the final two to record a 5-4 win, their first win of the season.

After a bye last week Highwood, leaders of the Shirley and District Monday Night League returned to action with a tough match away to fourth in the table The Bears, however they returned with a 7-2 win to put them on 32 points and a lead of two over The Wharf. Following their 8-1 win at Plume of Feathers Wharf with 30 points take over second place from Red Lion who had a bye this week, Red Lion in third place are two points behind Wharf with a game in hand. The Bears are on the same 28 points as Red Lion but have played one game more than their rivals.

The Flights move up into fifth place with a tight 5-4 win at the Lodge, which sees the Lodge slip to sixth.

Following his 2-1 defeat to Richard Mills last week, his first defeat of the season in the C’s Club Double Top Wednesday Night League, Jake Webster has been ousted from pole position and the new leader is Bob Nixon who has played and won all sixteen of his games so far. Nixon with a 2-1 win over Phil Ashford in which Ashford hit a maximum and Nixon hit two, plus a 3-0 success against Ryan Beale has seen Nixon take his points tally to 45 with a lead of two and a game in hand on second placed Webster.

Newcomer to the league Simon Edwards has kicked off his season in style with 3-0 wins over Ryan Beale, Richard Meigh, Mitchell Mann, Jack Sidwell, Connor Marshall, Aaron Anson and Chris Cooke to put him on a perfect 21 points and straight into the top half of the table with games in hand on all of the players above him. Another player who is fast climbing up the table is Adam Gallett who is currently in fifth place and like Edwards has games in hand on all those above him.

Britannia were the only losers in the top four teams in the Stourbridge and District Monday Night League as they went down 5-4 away to second in the table Ten Arches ‘A’ who remain two points behind leaders Brickmakers Arms after their 7-2 home win over Bird (Wordsley). Third in the table Ten Arches ‘B’ won 7-2 at Swan to keep within four points of their ‘A’ team but go six points clear of Britannia who hold on to fourth place with 38 points six more than the chasing pack of Ashwood, Bird (Stourbridge), Gate Hangs Well and British Oak.

Little change in the Brierley Hill Monday Night League table as all of the top seven teams won in week 33, however a 5-4 win at Lamp Tavern has confirmed Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club ‘A’ as league champions as they have a four points lead over their nearest rivals Bulls Head (Netherton) with just one remaining fixture. Bulls Head won 8-1 away to bottom of the table Limes Club, the win guaranteeing them the runners up spot.

The ECC Sports and Social Club, Showell Road, Wolverhampton, WV10 9NL will be staging a darts bonanza on Friday 14th December when local Tipton star and England International Jamie “Yozza” Hughes and reigning BDO Champion Glen “Duzza” Durrant will be taking part in an exhibition match.

Tickets for the evening will cost £10 each with the ticket stubs going into a draw whereby the owners of the drawn tickets will play Glen on stage. In addition to playing against Glen all players will receive a free complimentary professional photograph of Glen and the Lakeside Trophy.

Coleshill Social held on to pole position in division one of the South Birmingham Winter League making it two out of two wins when they beat The Gate 6-3. Second in the table C’s Top Guns opened their account with a 7-2 success at Banbury Arrows.

The Dog head the division two table with four points from three games after a close 5-4 result at The Trident in their latest encounter. Third placed Toby Jug are the only team in the division with a 100% win record but they have only played one game so far.

Week four in the Shirley Premier League saw a new player at the top of the table, with former leader Thomas Bent unavailable Antony Daly took full advantage to replace him with a 3-1 win over Steve Harper and a 4-0 success against Lee Lattimer to give him a total of 24 points, one more than Mark Henderson, Dave Heighway, Ken Hopton and Sam Hicks. Bent dropped to eighth in the table but with a straight win in his game in hand he would once again take over the number one spot.

Most notable result of the night was Dave Barrows picking up his first legs in a 2-2 draw with Jordan Ottley. The week’s £5 for the highest finish went to Steve Sidwell, a 143 checkout in his 3-1 win over Mick Bown.

The final week’s fixtures in the Camp Hill League saw Sheldon Marlborough Flights confirm themselves as runners up with a 6-1 win over wooden spoon winners Sedgemere Devil’s Club. The win took Sheldon’s points to 26, two more than third placed Tyseley WMC who won 5-2 at North Star. Champions White Swan Nomads still have an outstanding fixture with Journeys End Lions but whatever the result it will not affect the final league positions.

East Birmingham Allotment Holders Association took their unbeaten run in the Small Heath League to eleven games when they won 8-1 away to Wagon and Horses giving them a total of 22 points. Second in the table Heartlands Club have four points less than E.B.A.H.A after their 7-2 win at Sheldon Marlborough Flights.

The final of the Andy Bastable Trophy was the order of the day for the Netherton Thursday Night League and with finalists Fairfield not up to their usual standard of play Bulls Head had a rather comfortable 5-1 win to secure the title.

The league played their final rearranged fixture which saw league champions Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club win 5-4 against bottom team Netherton Conservative Club to give them a final total of 69 points, nine more than runners up Riddins Tavern.

Queens Head continue to lead the Combined Section of the Pip Club League making it four wins in as many games when they beat Gate (Amington) 8-1, helping them to their win were Sam Whittaker who notched two maximums and Mick Smith who recorded one. Hot on the heels of Queens Head are Belgrave Sports and Social Club whose 9-0 win at Sports Bar ‘180’ gave them a maximum six points from their three games to leave them just two behind Queens with a game in hand.

From a starting line-up of 58 players winner of the Cradley Tuesday Night League’s Last Competition of the Season was Steven Tipper who with a 3-1 result defeated Kevin Bambrick in the final to pick up the winner’s £90, Bambrick received £45.

Tipper had a straight 3-0 win over Karl Hipkiss in the semis while Bambrick was taken to a deciding leg by Alan Dimmock before winning 3-2. Both of the losing semi-finalists collected £20 with the quarter finalists T.Brannon, M.Preedy, M.Jeffrey and S.Bishop having £5 each.

With a final 3-0 win over W.Griffiths (Dewdrop ‘A’) C.Bowen (Waggon and Horses) won the Hilltop Friendly Tuesday Night League’s individual knockout. Bowen beat S.Cliff in the last four games while Griffiths took out G.Arnold.

A 6-1 win over Delph Bell by Brickmakers Arms ‘A’ plus a 5-2 win by Netherton Cricket Club ‘A’ against Old Star in the Brierley Hill Friday Night League means that the title will not be decide until the final games of the season as Brickmakers top the table with 32 points and the Cricket Club are second on the same number of points and trail by just four legs of average, should be a nerve tingling final fixture for both teams.

Congratulations to The Bell on winning the Rowley Monday Night League’s Bill Bishop Cup after defeating The George in the final. The Challenge Cup was won by Hare and Hounds with Lodgers the runners up.


A 5-0 win over King Arthur has seen Allen’s Sports Bar ‘A’ open up a massive 15 points lead at the top of the West Midlands Men’s Super League table. Woodside lost ground and their number two spot when they lost 3-2 at Yeltz Bar who have replaced them in second place with 86 points, two more than Woodside who are now placed third.

It was a good week in game 19 of the Stourbridge and District Wednesday Night League for Gigmill as for the first time in 17 games they chalked up their very first win a massive 6-1 success over Holly Bush ‘A’. The win has seen Gigmill move up two places off the foot of the table to be replaced at the bottom by Brickmakers Arms ‘B’ who lost their home tie with Fox Inn (Lye) 6-1. Gigmill, Brickmakers Arms ‘B’ and Holly Bush ‘A’ are all on two points.

At the other end of the table there were no problems for leaders Ashwood ‘A’ who kept their four points lead intact over second placed Swan with a 5-2 win over Bell ‘A’.

Coseley Tavern suffered a setback to their title hopes in the Sedgley and Gornal Tuesday Night League as they lost 7-2 away to fifth in the table Five Ways, they drop to third in the league on the same 18 points as Old Bulls Head who have replaced them in second place following their 7-2 win at Jolly Crispin giving them a big average lead on Coseley. Two points ahead of Old Bulls Head and Coseley Tavern are leaders Gornal Labour Club whose impressive 8-1 home win over Chainyard keeps them two points to the good on their rivals.
