A West Midlands Round Up By Alan Towe

Following their convincing 22-14 win over neighbours West Midlands in their last outing in the premier division of the BDO Inter County Championships Warwickshire this weekend will travel north to take on Cheshire at the Coppenhall WMC, Crewe, CW1 4NJ in the third of their scheduled nine games.

Prior to the fixture Warwickshire are on 42 points and in a comfortable fourth position in the table while their hosts have 26 points and are lying next to bottom of the table, just two points to the good on bottom placed Essex.

The South Birmingham Summer League had the finals of their Rose Bowl and Edna Meek Memorial Cup on their fixture card. Frst the Rose Bowl in which group ‘A’ champions C’s Top Guns beat group ‘C’ champions Marlborough Villains 6-3 with Luis Barberan hitting a maximum for the winners.

The Forest of Arden Winter League staged the first round of their Presidents Cup. Current league leaders C’s Kings had a convincing 9-0 win over C’s Bullets, the Kings in a high scoring mood with Luis Barberan hitting 100,134,140,125,117 plus a tremendous 161 game shot and Jason Jennings hitting 3×100,132,140,113 and a 119 outshot.

The bottom two teams played each other next to bottom Highwood Arms beating the bottom team C’s Exiles 5-4. Highwood Gerry’s Boys had a bye. C’s Exiles versus  Crown at Shard End was a late result.

Boldmere St Mikes had a 7-2 win at Pint Pot Flights in the Four Oaks and District League to put them top on average of the division one table. Second in the table Golden Hind won 6-3 at Red Lion to give them the same 4 points as Boldmere both teams having played three games. Second and third placed Boat and Old Oscott Arrows have only played two fixtures and are on the same 4 points as the top two teams but unlike them they are undefeated in their games, Boat had an 8-1 win against The Boot while Arrows had a bye this week.

The highest scoring team this week were division two leaders St Thomas Social Club who beat Boldmere Tap 6-3. Second and third placed Erdington Arrows and The Fox have both only played two games whereas St Thomas have played three, all three teams undefeated so far, Erdingotn adding a 7-2 win over Drakes Drum to their account while The Fox won 5-4 against The Oscott Social. The highlight of the week was provided by Drake Drum’s J.Clarke who with a 180 chalked up a seven darts leg.

In the third division The Towers were handed a 9-0 whitewash by Rosey Mac’s, but it could easily have been much closer as they lost five of those games 2-1. Sutton Sports and Social Club and Lad in the Lane were both down 4-3 in their respective matches against St Thomas’s Arrows and The Digby, both took the final two games for 5-4 wins.

At the moment the Shirley Premier League are in between seasons but while they wait for the new season to get underway on Thursday 8th November they are staging various knockouts the latest of which was an Open Singles Knockout which attracted 25 players.

The evening produced some top quality darts which included seven 180’s plus a superb 170 game shot from Mark Henderson who with wins against Phil Thomas (a repeat of last week’s final), Steve Harper, Chris Thomas jnr and Gary Cleverley he made his way into the final.

From the other half of the draw another Mark this time Mark Gwalchmai accounted for John O’Sullivan, Trevor Carter, Ken Hopton and Thomas Bent to book his place in the final.

Mark Gwalchmai had the better start to the final racing to a 3-0 lead as Mark Henderson struggled to find the form that got him to the last two. With a maximum in the fourth Henderson momentarily reduced the arrears but the £50 top prize went to Mark Gwalchmai when he won the fifth for a 4-1 victory. Henderson received £20 as runner up.


East Birmingham Allotment Holders Association took their unbeaten run to seven games in the Small Heath League when they won 7-2 at Emerald Club keeping intact their two points advantage over second placed Heartlands Club who beat Wagon and Horses 8-1. As a result of their defeat Wagon lose their third place and drop to fourth behind Sheldon Marlborough Arrows whose 7-2 win at Sheldon Marlborough Flights puts them on ten points, two more than Wagon and Horses.

The C’s Club Double Top Wednesday Night League is up to week three and newcomers this week Tony Randell and Chris Millward jnr are already making their mark in the league. Randell has kicked off his challenge with three straight 3-0 wins over Chris Millward snr, Lee Walker and James Buttle to put him on 9 points from the three games. Chris Millward jnr has won three of his opening five games to take him into the top half of the table, but holding on to pole position with 19 points from an unbeaten seven games is Jake Webster who holds a slender one point lead over second in the table Bob Nixon who has played six games without defeat and without dropping a single leg.

The Highwood completed the first half of the season in the Shirley and District Monday Night League with an 8-1 win at Sharmans Cross to take their winning run to 14 games and remain the only team without loss. Highwood have a four points lead over The Wharf and The Bears, Wharf winning their home tie with Legion Royals 7-2 and Bears winning by the same margin at Cider House.

Leaders of the Brierley Hill Monday Night League Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club ‘A’ had an important 8-1 win over fourth in the table Dudley Sports ‘A’ in week 30 to keep them top of the table on average from Bulls Head (Netherton) who fell further behind on average with a 6-3 win over third in the table Delph Bell who are now eight points behind their victors.

There were no real surprises in the Camp Hill League’s cup semi-final results this week as in the League Cup there were wins for Sheldon Marlborough Flights and White Swan Nomads who beat respective opponents Journeys End Lions and Emerald Club and in the Consolation Cup Tyseley WMC won against Station Wagon and North Star beat Sedgemere Devil’s Club.

With just one fixture remaining in the Henley and District Summer League the title has been thrown wide open after Studley Cricket Club beat Studley Conservative Club 6-3 to replace them at the top of the table. Both of the top two teams are on 28 points with the Cricket Club having the superior average. The title now depends on the final games of the season.

At the other end of the table there was a rare win for Beausale whose 6-3 win at Railway saw them move off the foot of the table and be replaced by Village Inn who lost 6-3 at Dorridge.

The Stourbridge and District Monday Night League have reached the midway point of their season and Brickmakers Arms have completed the half unbeaten after they won their twenty first game of the campaign at Ashwood 8-1. Second placed Ten Arches ‘A’ reduced the average arrears slightly with their 9-0 win at Kingswinford Conservative Club ‘B’ to keep within two points of Brickmakers and stay two points ahead of their own ‘B’ side who won their home game against Kingswinford Conservative Club ‘A’ 7-2.

In the Combined Section of the Pip Club League only two of the starting sixteen teams have a 100% win record as early as week four. A 9-0 win at Bulls Head puts Queens Head top of the table with Belgrave Sports and Social Club trailing on average following their 7-2 win against Old Liberal House, Gaz Podmore, Daz Jones and Steve Taft all hitting a maximum for Belgrave. There were 180’s for Queens players Matt Brindley and Sam Whittaker with Mark Martin chalking up a thirteen darts leg.

Bob Mills (Belgrave Club) was another player to hit a maximum in his team’s 5-4 win at Progressive Club.

Mark Martin (Queens) had a narrow miss for a ten darts 501 as he scored 140,140,171 and then had a ‘bounce out’ on the bull. Unlucky Mark.

Brickmakers Arms rounded off their season in the Cradley Tuesday Night League with a 5-4 win at Bulls Head, the title already in the bag before the game as Brickmakers finished the campaign ten points to the good in turn on both runners up and third placed Netherton Cricket Club ‘A’ and Bulls Head.

Congratulations also go to Brickmakers Arms for their 3-1 win over Riddins Tavern in the final of the league’s 5 a-side knockout to make it a terrific double.

With only a couple of fixtures to play on the Netherton Thursday Night League Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club have made the title theirs with a 7-2 away win over their nearest rivals Riddins Tavern. Following the defeat Riddins are six points behind the Ex Serviceman’s Club and have played one game more than them.

Netherton Conservative Club are doing their utmost not to finish bottom of the league as they added a 5-4 win at Delph Bell to their account to put them level on 18 points with their opponents who are just above them in the table.

Tipton Sports suffered a setback to their title hopes in the Hilltop Friendly Tuesday Night League when they lost their home tie with second in the table Dewdrop ‘A’ 5-2. Both teams are now on 60 points, Tipton Sports hanging on to the lead on average.

Waggon and Horses lost their third place and dropped to fifth after a shock 4-3 defeat away to Merry-Go-Round ‘A’.

Third in the Silver End Sunday Morning League Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club narrowed the gap on second placed Netherton Cricket Club to just two points when they beat them 5-3, at the same time extending the lead for top team Brickmakers Arms ‘A’ to nine points.

At the bottom end of the table there was a first win in 14 for High Acres as they beat next to bottom Kings Head 7-1.

With just three remaining fixtures in the Rowley Monday Night League the title is still not decided as leaders George added an 8-1 win over Ex Serviceman’s ‘B’ and second placed Bell went one better with a 9-0 success against Whiteheath Tavern to leave both teams on 52 points.

There was a rare win for bottom placed Loyal Lodge, only their third in 27 games as they beat high riding Ivy Bush 6-3.

Chainyard were the only losers in the top seven teams in the Sedgley and Gornal Tuesday Night League going down 6-3 away to fifth placed Netherton Cricket Club. Coseley Tavern hold on to their unbeaten record and pole position with a surprisingly close 5-4 win at Meadow Lark who are some nine places and eight points behind them.

In order Ashwood ‘A’ and ‘B’ are the top two teams in the Stourbridge and District Wednesday Night League and in game 14 both of them won 4-3 to keep the difference between them to two points. The ‘A’ side won at Wombourne Cricket Club and the ‘B’ at home against Ten Arches ‘A’. Swan and Ten Arches ‘B’ are placed third and fourth respectively and as the top two won by the same margin strangely so did they as they both won 7-0 in turn against Glasscutters and High Acres.

It was certainly not unlucky thirteen for Allen’s Sports Bar ‘A’ in the West Midlands Men’s Super League as they took their unbeaten run to thirteen games with a 4-1 home win over Cabin to take their lead over second in the table Yeltz Bar to five points with a game in hand. Yeltz Bar won their game away to bottom of the table Colebatch’s 5-0 keeping them three points ahead of third placed Woodside Inn who won 4-1 at Cradley Liberal Club.

There are big leads for the three leaders of the Wolverhampton Tuesday Night League division one and two singles and division one doubles but it’s still all to play for in the division two doubles as leaders Royal, Albrigton are only top on average from Woodfield Social and the two teams just two points better off than third and fourth Wednesfield Legion and Penn Bowling although Penn have played one game more than the three teams above them.
