Darts: Phil’s crowned county darts champion

Welsh international player Phil Evans came out on top to win the Eric Walters Pembrokeshire Open darts tournament, recently staged in Whitland.

The tournament has made a welcome return after not being held for a number of years.

Incredibly, it attracted 164 players from all over the country, which included five Welsh internationals.

The competition was named in memory of the late Eric Walters, a well-known darts player from Milford Haven who regularly played for Pembrokeshire.

Eric’s son Darrel said he was delighted the tournament was staged in memory of his dad.

The final went to the wire as Brecon’s Phil Evans beat Fishguard’s Clive Lewis, in a closely-fought battle, which was a fitting end to a well supported event.

In the semi-final Pembrokeshire’s Jonny Clayton lost 4-2 against Evans and Lewis took the huge scalp of Welsh international Mark Salmon to reach the final.

At the quarter-final stage Evans beat Pembrokeshire’s Darren Hawkins and Johnny Clayton got the better of Dorion Jones.

Mark Salmon defeated fellow Welsh international Martyn Freeman and Clive Lewis beat Wayne Evans, also of Pembrokeshire.

Other players to reach the last 16 were Tim Hendra, Paul Hood, Carl Lewis, Lee Jones, Greg Reynolds, Rob Alford, Wayne Davies and Robert Coverdale.

This is the county’s most prestigious darts tournament with £2,000 prize money donated by The Walters Group.

Pembrokeshire officials Tracey Hawkins-Greene, Sue Phillips and Kathy Allenby all did a brilliant job making sure that the tournament ran smoothly.

The late Eric Walters’ wife Vera, supplied and presented the cups to winner Phil Evans and runner-up Clive Lewis.

Whitland Sports and Social Club secretary Lloyd Evans presented £100 to Mrs Walters which she will donate to her named charity Glan Cleddau School, in Haverfordwest.

Follwing this year’s success, it is hoped the tournament will be staged again next year.
