Darts News – A West Midlands Round Up By Alan Towe

The Sheldon and District Winter League played off the finals of their singles and doubles knockouts, in the singles premier division leaders provided two of the four semi finalists Mark Wall just losing out by 2-1 to Tom White (Saltley Amateur Gardeners) but Pete Yardley making the final with a similar 2-1 win over Mackadown Social’s Martin Heaven.
The final turned out to be a clear 2-0 result going in favour of Saltley’s Tom White.

Crown at Olton also supplied two of the last four pairings in the doubles knockout the difference being they were drawn against each other and it was Jason Jennings and Tony Randell who got the 2-1 result over their team mates Bob Nixon and John Sidwell. The other last four game saw Jason Prince and Neil Parsonage (Crown at Shard End) beat Glen James and Martin Heaven from Mackadown Social again 2-1, and that was the scoreline in the final as Jason Jennings and Tony Randell took the title with Prince and Parsonage runners up.

With the domestic league fixtures all completed the South Birmingham League were involved in the finals of their League Knockout Cup and Jimmy Walker Cup, in the former the top two teams in group one squared up to each other and once again as in the league Erdington Members Club finished as runners up as the divisional champions Mackadown Social got the 6-3 verdict.
The Jimmy Walker Cup final brought together Coleshill Social from group one and The C’s from group two with Coleshill running out the winners with a very close 5-4 result.

The two Journeys teams in the Forest of Arden Summer League continued their winning starts to the season as Journeys End beat Chelmsley Town 8-1 in division one to stay one point ahead of second placed Crown Arrows who had a 5-3 home win against Greville Arrows and are also one point to the good on third in the table Highwood KB who beat Ivy Leaf 6-2.
In division two it’s Journeys End Flights who lead the way making it two wins in as many games with their 6-2 win away to Highwood Exiles putting them two points clear of their nearest rivals Riley’s Resurrection who after losing their opening game of the season got on to winning ways with a 5-3 win at Inn On The Green.

Cotterills Lane Club kept their 100% win record intact in the Camp Hill League with a close but nevertheless a 4-3 win over Wagon and Horses to maintain their four points lead over Holy Souls who were 5-2 winners against Devil’s Club.
At the other end of the table next to bottom Station Flights had a somewhat surprising 7-0 win over Grange Social Club to take them four points ahead of New Inns who are at the foot of the table and lost 5-2 at Hay Mills Lions.

The Winmau Darts Centre in the Wolverhampton Indoor Community Sports Stadium attracted in excess of 120 would be hopefuls to go through to the men’s grand finals  of the BDO World Trophy to be staged at Lakeside on the weekend of the 28th – 30th May.
With four men going through to the grand finals the players were split up into four groups the group one final fought out between Ross Montgomery and Martin C.Atkins with Montgomery from Fife winning the tie 6-4.
Group two was an all Welsh affair the result once again being 6-4 with Gwent’s Nick Kenny getting the verdict against Mark Layton.
Group three was the closest result of the four groups as Essex man Barry Lynn edged his way through with a 6-5 result over Bradley Kirk.
Making up the trio of 6-4 wins was group four winner Ryan Joyce from Tyne and Wear who defeated Rhys Griffin from Wales.

The ladies were playing for one of the two places in the grand finals and in their last four playoff Surrey’s Laura Turner beat Maggie Sutton 4-1 and joining Laura at Lakeside will be Rhian Griffiths from Wales after her 4-2 success against Claire Brookin.

Although Mick Gorst had a 3-0 win over Steve Sidwell and a 3-2 win against Tom Bent he was ousted from the number one spot in the Shirley Red Lion Premier League by Chris Thomas whose 3-0 wins against Stuart Dixon and Steve Heeks gave him a total of the same twelve points as Gorst but unlike Gorst who has lost three legs Thomas has not dropped a leg so far.
Despite his loss to Gorst Steve Sidwell actually moved up one place to third as he followed up his defeat with a 3-1 win over Paul Higgins, he replaces Mick Bown in third place as after Bown won 3-1 against Tony Daly he lost 3-0 to Brian Lawton.
Dave Fisher had the biggest drop of the week going from fifth to twelfth after losing 3-0 and 3-2 in turn to Steve Heeks and Chris Devlin.

Highwood continue to impress in the Shirley and District Monday Night League taking the unbeaten run to fifteen games with a 5-4 win at Cider House to keep them two points ahead of Shirley Red Lion who won their tie at Highwood Bears by the same 5-4 margin.
Reigning champions Crown Jewels are third a further two points adrift after handing out a 9-0 whitewash to their hosts Sharmans Cross.

Paul Sunner has taken over pole position in the Premiership division of the Sheldon Marlborough Cricket Club Singles League. Sunner had a 2-1 win against Dave Howlett and a 2-0 success over former leader Paul Brown to give him six points after four games, Sean O’Donnell, the only player in the division without a defeat is also on six points but from three games, his latest win being 2-0 against Mark O’Donnell.
Ken Salsbury moves up to the top spot in the Championship division adding a 2-0 win over Neal Rughani and a 2-1 win against Alan Eden snr to his tally to give him eight points a two points lead over Pete Jones who he replaced at the top of the table after Jones lost 2-1 to Jay Vaughan, Jones then recovered to win by the same scoreline against Mitch O’Donnell.
Steve McCarthy leads the way in division one again with a perfect eight points from four games, Steve having 2-1 wins against both Nicola Brown and Marie Jenkins.

With a 29-19 win over The Untouchables The Outcasts have moved up into second place in the Winmau Centre Monday Night League with a total of 244 points replacing Is It In who had a closer 27-21 win over What’s The Point to leave them two points behind Outcasts.
3 Yam Yams and A.Stokie remain in pole position a convincing 33-15 win against Here For The Beer taking their points tally to 254 and their unbeaten run to seven games plus giving them a clear lead of ten points.

There was no change in the Brierley Hill Monday Night League table, however there was a shock for leaders Dudley Sports ‘C’ who after winning their opening fourteen games lost their home tie with Bulls Head (Netherton) 5-4. Despite the loss Dudley Sports ‘C’ remain in pole position their lead now being reduced to four points as second placed The Bridge won 7-2 away to Brickmakers Arms.

Leaders of the Pensnett and Bromley Tuesday Night League Samson and Lion won a vital game against second in the table The Bridge 4-3 to open up a two point’s gap between the two teams. Prince of Wales in the Pip Club League kept their hopes of winning the division one title alive with a 6-3 away win over fourth placed Sports Bar ‘180’ but second in the table Bulls Head ‘A’ (Polesworth) won 9-0 at Two Gates Club and are now just two points behind the leaders with a slightly better average and a game in hand.
Division two brought together the top and bottom teams leaders Winning Post returning from Bulls Head ‘B’ (Polesworth) with a massive 17-1 win which secures the title for them as Globe Trotters in second place finished all square at 9-9 with Progressive Club and trail Winning Post by five points with one to play.

Ashmore Inn moved up from fifth to joint second with Gilberts Bar in division one of the Wolverhampton Tuesday Night League following their 5-2 win at Bradmore ‘A’ leaving both themselves and Gilberts Bar six points behind leaders Riley’s ‘C’ with two games in hand, Riley’s ‘C’ winning by the same 5-2 at home to Roebuck.
Riley’s ‘A’ were the only losers in the top four teams in division two going down 5-2 at Bird in Hand. Top team Dog and Partridge were yet again 5-2 winners in their game at Wednesfield Legion ‘C’ while Pavilion in second place join the leaders on 12 points with their 6-1 home win over Ukrainian Club.
